which pads

hi all

this has probably been asked before many times but is there a way of knowing which pads fit the front calipers without having to remove them and look. the car is on rear stands at mo waiting for links fitting.

is there a cut off point when the shape of pads changed etc.
mine is 2000 w reg 2.0 hdi 110 estate.
