Hello, where's the rear of the car going?

Hello again 406OC members,

only a couple of days being a member of 406OC so thanks for the help so far got loads cleared up, whilst travelling out and about today, i approached a roundabout and began my manouvere on the roundabout and noted the the backend of my car tried to skid out.

Now Officer, I wasnt trying to appear on "top gear" or "traffic cops" and wasnt even going fast, but i immediatley felt somewhat concerned about driving the car, when i arrived on site, i looked under the rear end of the car looking for sellotape or bluetack holding both halfs of the car the car together but all seemed well, bluetack doing its job just fine!

Question, is this a "normal" nightmare characteristic of the backend on a 406 HDi (90) 1999 LX estate to want to go somewhere on its own? I have only had the car a few weeks and dont want to get rid unless it is "Goosed", my mate who handed me the car didnt ever say that one day i would be testing the airbag function real soon.

Anyone else suffered anything similar, not involving Beer, medication, destraction from the female gender etc, or just generally being asleep or chewing their townails whilst driving?

Hi mate,
Mine fished out at the rear end when ifirst got the car,
ivery nearly wrote it off,

Top link Failiure caused mine to fish out,
it wouid be worth looking at the Top links or Antiroll bar bushes etc,.

Grab the tops of the wheels whilst the weight of the cars on them and pull if you feel any play it will be the Top links, :wink:

Thank you for the quick reply, i was otherwise contemplating putting tyres on the rear of the car and turning it into a bumper car :lol:

Are the easy to replace the anti roll links and is it better to go for the metal or plastic link roll bar variety?

hello garry. the rear toplinks are all metal mate.

the rear droplink is plastic.

the front droplinks are also metal.

yes they are easy to change with correct tools. a good socket set is all thats needed really. mole grips are handy as well.

also you will need a tub of ti-pex. you need to mark the inner bolt so that it goes back the same way you took it off. because this bolt adjust the camber of the wheel .

In all honesty Get them checked and if there Fubard change them Quick!
inearly lost my car ive driven some fast motors with slidy rears but this thing got way out of control,

ask others on here if you dont believe me iwas going to scrap the car it was that bad,

its not worth driving it if it was as bad as mine went it will fish out and you will wipe the car out,
the 406s are twitchy but when they do fail the back end will do what it wants too,
Mine was like driving a car on Train tracks :(

Oh, and don't forget the obvious ones:

1) Check your rear tyre tread depth. Also, if your rear suspension is out of whack (as the others are saying it probably is) then this will be buggering your tyres up something rotten.

2) Check your tyre pressures. 34 PSI (2.30 bar) all round.

3) Don't use the handbrake whilst turning :wink: :lol:

Thank you Gentlemen,

I am glad for the advice, "this weekend i are'll mostly be a spanner monkey!" .

Having glanced under the car this morning the anti roll bar rubber mounts have perished and cracked so I think i'll renew the whole lot in an attempt to keep the car on the road.

oh yes and no more applying the handbrake on roundabouts :lol:
