Hi, Got a 2001 1.8 d9. Getting some clunking noise from the rear when going over bumps and stuff. Absolutley fine on the smooth stuff. Would it be the rear bushes and rear drop links? If so how much do you reckon on getting these replaced at a normal friendly garage. NOT Kwik Fit!!!! Rather pay for someone else to do it as not that comfortable in doing the job myself! The other option is that I stay on the smooth roads (if any) and avoid bumps!!!!!! Many thanks

it couid be Top links or droplinks.
whilst the cars weight is on the wheels pull at the top of the wheel if theres play it will be the top links failing.
ive just done mine its fairly easy to do.

the top links are around £18 each for good brands,
on ebay you can pick top links up for under a tenner a pair,
drop links for the rears are pennys

not too costly then. will try the wobble test when i get a chance...thanks

it will probably be the rear top link .

the rear droplinks dont often get mentioned ever . you never hear of any1 on this forum changing them

but the rear toplink is always being mentioned so it will be them

Sod the garages.

Replace it your self its a Doddle, some Tipex and some Spanners is all you need,

is there a guide at all on here on how to do it? only basic tools needed???? plus it would be handy to have a proper jack as wouldnt even contemplate doing it with the one from the car!!!!

gave it the wheel wobble test this morning. not much play on the o/s/r but the n/s/r there is quite a bit of movement there!!! top links to be replaced then!!!! thanks

We've probably all done it, but you should never work under a car thats supported by a jack, no matter how good the jack is. Buy yourself a set of axle stands, they're an absolute essential if you're going to be working on your car.

The jack that is supplied with the car is perfectly capable of doing the job it was designed for, so instead of buying another jack - invest in a set of stands, they quite literally could save your life.

I carry a folding axle stand in the car at all times, it doesn't take up much room.

The only other bit of advice I can give you with that particular job is to have a spare bolt available, and stick plenty of penetrating oil on the bolt, and give it time to work before you attempt to undo it. My bolt sheared, the car was off the road, and my nearest stealers is 20 odd miles away I had to get a bus for the first time in god knows how many years to my local breakers (5 miles away) to get a replacement bolt.

Bolts shearing aside, its a simple enough spanner job.

Get the oe ones from eurocarparts. They aren't much dearer but they are a hell of a lot sturdier!
