Knocking under braking/acceleration

My 406 110 HDi (2001 Estate) is now knocking/creaking from the front end. It occurs at slow speeds on take off and under braking and also sometimes on cornering. I'm suspecting engine mounts but has anyone else had a similar experience and resolved the noise?

Probably your suspension - the anti-roll bar droplinks on the 406 seem to be made from cheap materials, and produce that knocking noise. I had it myself. Thankfully, the parts are cheap. Don't get them off eBay though, or you'll probably get the same problem back again in a few month's time - go for genuine Peugeot parts.

I have exactly the same issue on my D8, a nice 'clunk' when you engage/disengage the clutch but at no other time when driving, my money is on engine mounts. A knocking from the droplinks should be present regardless of speed/gear changes where as engine mount movement will be 'mainly' when you put torque on or off.

Balljoints or wishbone bushes could also cause a clunking when setting off or stopping, also when accelerating or decelerating while moving. Would be fairly noticeable if you were to jack the car up and wiggle the front wheels around.

my money is on the front anti roll bar droplinks.

its too common on a 406 to think its something else.

dont get me wrong it could well be something else. but my money is on the droplinks

Ok,

Thanks for the replies.
I understand going for OE parts, having experienced some cheap rubbish before! Any recommendations or is it best to go to the main dealer?

NO do not go to main dealers.

any good motor spares store should supply good quality parts. at half the cost . well a lot more than half actually.

i think a droplink from peugeot is £35.32

you can get both for cheper than that

ps ive always got mine from ebay. and easy get 8 months out of them . and ebay price is £10 for both
and its an easy DIY job if you can use tools

I had knocking coming on/off power sharply on my first 406, was the O/S/F driveshaft, could be freely wiggled with the nose of the car in the air
