CLUNK!!

Hi all

I have a 1997 406 V6 Saloon.

When pulling away or cornering quickly there is a CLUNK noise from around the drivers footwell area.

Following some advise I have replaced the front drop links but to no avail.

The clunk does not happen during normal driving and gear changes or even when going over bumps.

If pulling away very gently, all is ok. But if i pull away normally, the clunk comes back.

Someone has suggested the engine mount bushes, but I don't know where to check. I assume there would be mounts top and bottom of the engine.

I dont fancy giving it to a dealer to sort out as the car only cost £250. Would I be doing any damage by just driving it and putting up with the clunk. The MOT is due in June and the result of that determines whether I keep or break the car.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation

I think you can put it in for a test 28 days before expires, so if you're mot is due in early june, you'll be able to submit it in early May which is only a few weeks away.

You can of course submit your car for an mot any time you like, but if you submit it early you still keep your original expiry date (ie your mot expires 8th June, you submit it on the 12th May and it passes, your mot should then be valid until the 8th june of the following year).

I'd stick it in for an MOT as soon as you can, and they might well point out exactly where the problem lies, you can then decide whether its worthwhile getting it sorted, or you can punt the car out with a few weeks ticket left.
