REAR RATTLE ON 2004 406 2.0 HDI EST

I have had an annoying rattle or slight knocking for some time. Having removed the relevant trim to gain access, the sound is definitely coming from the area at the top of the rear near side shock absorber housing - rather than from underneath the car. I have removed the shock absorber for inspection and the garage said it looked OK. (No problems with passing MOT.) On refitting the shock absorber I swapped the bushes around i.e. from the bottom to the top in the hope that this might improve things. But no improvement. I am now going to interchange the rear shock absorbers and if the sound has moved as well then I know that shock absorber must be faulty in some way. My garage listened on a test run and thought that a weakness in the metal around the top of the shock absorber housing requiring spot welding might be the answer. That sounds rather unlikely to me and I'm reluctant to spend money unless I am pretty sure of the fault first. Any ideas or suggestions please?
PS My first posting as new member. I presume submission for approval is automatic and apologies
if this is not the case!
Thanks

rear toplink i would say . common thing to go and start knocking.
(you cant detect this with play in the wheel. my car didnt have no play in the wheel but the toplink had definately gone. only in certain places would the wheel have play ie jacked up so high)
check your rear toplinks. i bet the knocking is caused by them.
these are the part BUT DONT BUY CHEAP EBAY ONES. THEY DONT LAST VERY LONG. AFTER I GOT MINE CHANGED THE KNOCKING WAS GONE

PS i very much doubt it being the shocks

ye its worth it mate. you can do it yourself but mark up the bolt so you can put it back the same way. or a 4 wheel allingment will be needed .

Hi
I've got the same problem. I replaced all the droplinks, stabiliser arms and roll bar bushes(rear end). Six months later i've got a rattly noise on the back end when i go down the dirt track where i live and over bumps.
Garage can't look at it for another week so i think i'll have to have a look myself. I bought the parts off ebay so i'm thinking they weren't such a good buy now.
Also found a hole in the exhaust so off to the welding bloke to get it patched...lol

cheap rear toplinks from ebay dont last 2 minutes mate
its been said a few times on here via different members.
best to get good rear top links.
(i used cheap ebay droplinks for the front and they have well outlasted good ones from dealers or factors. i've had these on now 12 months and there still strong. apart from the rubber covering the ball joint which has now started to perrish and brake)

Hi everyone
Just had a look at the rear end of the car today and its just a knackered droplink on the n/s/r so i've decided to buy a pair of them from gsf tommorow and get it fixed on tuesday morning the bottom nut looks a bit of a pig to get off though. So i won't be buying droplinks from ebay again as they only lasted 6 months about 10000 miles. So not as bad as i first thought. Toplinks look sound gave them a good pull about. Checked the subframe bushes as well all nice and tight.
Also noticed i will need a new backbox for mot so i'll be on the lookout for one of those soon and get the welding bloke to sort it out. Not prepared to pay out for the whole exhaust (back box and middle box) Last time i was quoted £110 for it.
