Check this then, pressure washed Under the 406 a few days ago ready to fit rear suspension parts and new disc and pads on front, I then drove car for about 2-3 miles just to "shake" off water and get water out of brakes etc, anyway, I parked it up for a few days, yesterday evening when I got in from work I noticed the front of the car looked low, I then had a quick look but couldn't see anything, stupidly I drove car forward a few feet and heard a nasty grinding noise, jacked it up and turns out the o/s coil spring had broke!! Remember the car hadn't moved!!! Anyhow, what happened was the broken part of spring was resting on the cv boot..... Can you guess what the grinding noise was.... Yes, not only now do I need to do a pair of road springs but also mangled, split cv boot!!! Lol, the joys of motoring!!!!!!

common thing to happen on a 406 . its happned quite a lot this year to many 406 owners...

it was a bad move driving the car, when my front springs went last year (over night parked up) i didnt move it anywere,
got a mobile mechanic to come to me and change them

I've had springs break before during driving etc! Never in 10 yrs + of doing mechanics have I seen/ heard of it just breaking overnight!! Lol, another one to add to the strange things with motors!!

Seems a fair few D9s too.

I don't think I've seen anyone on here say their springs broke while they were driving it, it always seems to be "I came out in the morning and...". You'd even think they'd be more likely to break while they were in use, rather than static. Bluddy weird cars

My new ones are made in Sweden , do you think they might be more resilient ??

the thing is with ebay they always tend to be cheap parts imported ,
but sweden usually make good stuff so should be ok i think,

the springs are a funny thing really to keep an eye on, they can brake at anytime

I've had a spring break on a car whilst stationary. Not a Peugeot though. It was a 1989 Mercedes 300CE I used to own many years ago. Didnt use that much only got it out on sunny weekends, not a daily driver. Hadnt used it for about 3 weeks. Went in to the garage get things from time to time, then went in one day, saw the car was low on one side. The front spring had just broke!

Better that it broke this way and not at high speed me thinks!

I started a thread on another 406 forum a few years ago and asked for all to post their experiences......the majority of those who bothered to post almost all had their spring break
whilst parked,only one or two said they had it happen whilst in motion and were at low speed.
This is the only saving grace here as if it happened at speed.....well we all know what could happen.I wrote direct to Peugeot who replied to say that " the 406 was not known to suffer this problem in any numbers that would lead them to believe there was an inherent problem" phew what a relief my arse as Big Jim Royal would say.
Seemingly according to Pug this is caused by salt on the roads !!!!!!!!!!! and mileage..........yet some had springs break and then had replacements go again in very small mileages!
My own went and it was still fairly well painted so in my book that throws the salt/corrosion verdict.
I went on to ask them as they offered spring catchers for their partner vans why not have something made for the 406 ??? their answer,no large scale problem exists with the 406 and it is out of production, also the suspension setup is such that it would be impossible to attach something similar to the partner van.

the 406's front springs are a very big spring, this could well be the cause of them going
wen i had mine done i could not beleive the pressure the spring had to be to get it on the shock

im seriously thinking of lowering mine (again)
i thought about it last year but since i had the new springs on the front it looks like a bloody 4x4 and i dont like it

i may get it dropped 35mm in the summer see how it goes

I think Pug are copping out here because spring breakage doesn't seem to be any more common than on many other cars. They don't make 'em like they used to

iwent thru 5 springs in my old mondeo thats in a Year,
Luckily the puggy seems to be Good on not snapping springs,

if anything ithink the front springs are too hard on the 406s -iwish icouid make mine so it glides over bumps,
Maybe this is why the Xantia had the Hova-craft style suspension,

ive been told the xantia and the 406 are the same chassis

Xantia suspension would be great and a lot more comfy too easy to change the spheres on them only about 2 mins per side wonder if citroen will ever use any of that tech on the pugs suspension

My mate had a Xantia petrol turbo model it was rapid ,
But the car was like it was Floating made you feel sea sick,

The clickin noise they make is anoying too,
there ideal for Going thru rivers tho ..the rise and fall lever came in handy,

it Got propper thrashed on the beach
