406 rear nearside wheel locked on
Driving home last night and within a mile of driving tons of smoke from rear of car and car came to a sudden halt, the rear wheel has just locked on solid.got recovery home and had wheel of this morning, got a friend to press brake and could see the piston moving on the caliper,so my question is,could it be a seized handbrake behind the drum, maybe a spring has gone or something related to it,totally baffled now, appreciate any help, hoping its not the caliper.

Could be the handbrake - cable inner rusted to the outer? Or the calliper - have the sliding pins seized?

Re: 406 rear nearside wheel locked on
not sure regarding the sliders,i saw the brakes and piston moving when the brakes were applied? everyone is telling me it could be the handbrake but its just heresay until i get to garage tommorow which will need to be rear lifted and towed,im hoping its not the caliper, have you seen the price of them.
Re: 406 rear nearside wheel locked on
if you removethe brake caliper/ pads then try to turn the wheel,if it turns its the handbrake if it dosnt its the caliper.
also check that the handbrake cable is free and not seized on.

took car for drive today and noticed a slight rumbling noise from the wheel that was locked up and freed, got home and jacked it up and spun it freely and there was no rumbling but i could here something catching,it sounded like a combination of pads scraping the disc or backplate, just rang garage and he told me to take it back in morning.thats what happens when you go to a back street garage, there are no receipts either.

they will give u a receipt if you ask for one
they should fix it at no cost to you if its the parts they fitted but if its something else expect another bill
not all backstreet garages are bad , my local garage is a backstreet garage with a superb reputation of doing jobs well
had my cambelt done there other month ...

try useing the handbrake a few times to aline the shoes.
you should feel a slight rubbing as the pads are always in contact with the disc.

thanks for the advice with the handbrake i will try it,getting back to the backstreet garages,im surprised the mechanic didnt spot the perished caliper piston seal, can you replace these on there own or do you buy a kit.

perished caliper piston seal? didnt see that in your previos postsparcelman wrote:thanks for the advice with the handbrake i will try it,getting back to the backstreet garages,im surprised the mechanic didnt spot the perished caliper piston seal, can you replace these on there own or do you buy a kit.
you should be able to buy a kit but its easier and quicker to replace the caliper with a new /2nd hand one.
to give you a idea a seal kit is about 15 pounds and it will take about a hour to do, but the piston could be scored so you might need to replace that as well ,a second hand caliper will cost you about 20-25 pounds or a recon one about 50.
