Fixed!
The recently replaced wheel bearing was the problem. Replaced again and my car is running sweet!. Unfortunately the bearing fell apart coming out, so I'll never know what the problem was. My garage got a replacement (from a different supplier) and just charged me £30.00 for labour-they'll claim money back from the original supplier for the replacement bearing.
I've probably aged a year wondering what the hell was going on, but all's well that ends well.

Well done. I wonder if it was a faulty bearing or the way they fitted it?
