Hi
Anyone know what this could be?
Suddenly, I had the ABS & ESP warning lights coming on at the same time and then a short time later, a whining sound that sounded like a faulty wheel bearing. This sound varies in noise and pitch and is intermittent just like the ABS & ESP warning lights coming. I think the whining noise and warning lights could be linked as these faults all started appearing around the same time.
I got the ABS rings and wheel bearings checked and apparently these are OK. Could it be a wheel bearing has a fault and the sound only appears intermittently? I've been told the sound would be there all the time if a bearing was faulty. No faults show up on ECU.
Thanks for any help.

Re: ABS & ESP warning lights on at same time
Hi there!
The cpu records no faults despite the warning? Strangeness
If all that's been checked then I've run out of ideas, however the ESP system seems to have some sort of pump on it, I wonder if this is carping out on you
Is this noise dependent on road speed, engine speed or neither of these?

Re: ABS & ESP warning lights on at same time
Noise increases with speed when I do hear it.
This intermittent noise and ESP / ABS lights could be due to rear brakes. Had all the wheels off today and rear discs quite badly corroded and pads housing kit looked quite corroded as well as if the pads not moving as they should.
This gave me a chance to check the wheel bearings as well all OK. Getting the new rear brakes done tomorrow and will check out the rear brake shoes before fitting the new discs and pads.

What are you using to diagnose the fault?
A standard code reader will not show ABS /ESP faults.
I would say you have a faulty ABS sensor.
Check the rear ABS rings.
Re: ABS & ESP warning lights on at same time
Got the rear discs and pads replaced. Also, the backplate on one of the rear wheel brakes was quite corroded with a piece missing; a fix was put in for that.
Noise now gone as are ABS & ESP warning lights coming on.

Re: ABS & ESP warning lights on at same time
My 406 hdi failed its recent MOT on ABS warning light being on all the time. Never had a car with ABS
before. However the problem was far easier to fix than I would of imagined .The previous mechanics had left
off the mounting bracket for the sensor wire which allowed the sensor wire to touch wheel which partially rubbed
thru the outer insulation into 1 of the 2 wires barely a nick into the wire was enuff to put ABS light on 24/7 This was on 1 of the front wheels I had the problem. I would certainly check the wiring around the rear. i dont know what ESP is tho
