Hi, just been quoted £150 (down from £180 !!!) for new front discs and pads by local fitters.
How much of a job is it to change them on a 406 HDI 2.0? Never done one of these before, so is it a dificul job?
Are the calipers on sliders or do they bolt off etc?
Is there a guide here on how to do it?
Also, any advice on which make of discs/pads to buy? Pagid or Eibech seem to be cheapest on offer from EuroCarParts.
Many thanks

It's not a particularly difficult hob, but you will need a decent T55 torx bit to remove the caliper mounting bolts.
Only done it once, I used Mintex from an eBay seller.
Sometimes the pad wear sense leads are different lengths, so check before fitting.
Carparts4less is the same outfit as Eurocarparts, but cheaper.
(Google discount codes for both first).

2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

It's a very simple job.
You will need a 13mm spanner/socket and ratchet and a T55 torx bit half inch drive with a breaker bar or large ratchet/T bar with an extension, the T55 bolts are very tight if they have never been off before.
Undo your wheel nuts and safely jack up the car supporting it on axle stands, take off the wheels.
undo the bottom 13mm bolt on the caliper bracket and swivel it upward so that you can get a large screwdriver in between the rear pad and the caliper piston to push the piston back (you can use a G clamp or something else suitable to push the piston back.)
Swivel the caliper off the caliper bracket and support it on the strut somewhere.
Undo the T55 torx bolts and remove the caliper bracket.
Put the car in gear and undo the 2 disc retaining screws (can't remember the size).
Knock the disc of from behind with a hammer.
Clean the surface of the hub thoroughly, don't leave any dirt or rust, then grease the hub surface where the disc mounts.
Clean the new disc surfaces with brake cleaner to remove transit grease.
Fit the new disc and screw up the mounting screws.
Clean the calipers where the pads fit into.
Check that the new pads fit into the calipers easily, if not, file the edges down until the pads fit nicely.
Fit the pads into the calipers after coating the back and outer edges with grease (your choice of grease, i don't like copper grease, but it's your choice.)
Refit the caliper brackets using a little thread lock on the bolts then torque them up.
Slide the caliper top bolt slider into the top hole and swivel the caliper into position for fitting the bottom bolt, tighten the bottom bolt then pump the brake pedal until solid.
Refit your wheel and lower the jack, tighten the wheel to torque setting and do the other side.
I use Mintex brakes and brake grease.
Always take care when working on brakes and be sure to pump the brake pedal until solid before you move the car.
