Help for heroes charity drive in Peugeot 406!

Post by Thisrouteisnotenough »

Hi guys, please read below and give as much advertisement as you can!

From Sgt Dave Bartlett
Defence Movements School
Royal Air Force Brize Norton
Carterton
Oxfordshire
OX18 3LX

Email : [email protected]

In 2008 Cpl Darryl Gardiner was in an Improvised Explosive Device incident in Afghanistan. He was recovering a wounded soldier to a Chinook and drove over a mine and as a result died of his injuries.

Darryl would have been 30 years old in 2012. To recognise this we thought it would be fitting to do something in his memory. On the 8th September 2012 we will be driving a Peugeot 406 GLX estate. The team will travel around Europe visiting famous filming locations, such as the multiple hairpin Furka Pass and the Contra Dam before finishing in Monaco.

More details at the following link http://www.bangerrun.com

Our team is made up as follows:

Sergeant Bartlett (Royal Air Force)
Sergeant Gardiner – Darryl‘s brother (Royal Air Force)
Sergeant Allsop (Royal Air Force)
Danny Dignan (former Royal Marine)

We are looking for contributions to help with the purchase of the car, petrol, insurance, ferry crossings, parts, labour and break down cover. We are looking for in the region of £3000 towards our total running costs.  For this, we will happily advertise your company on our car and wear any t-shirts you would like.  As well as this we will upload photos to the internet along the route.

We are also looking for sponsorship for Help for Heroes which can be found at http://www.justgiving.com/thisrouteisnotenough  We are confident of raising as much money as possible for the charity.  We also have a Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/159382554198803/ We will be posting a daily blog so all sponsors can see our progress.

In return for your help we would be more than happy to display your company name on the side of the car, and wear any merchandise from your company. Even the smallest donation would be of help to our cause. Cheques can be made payable to Banger run 2012 and sent to the address above.

What a brilliant idea. A really worthwhile cause and hopefully a great trip for all concerned.
(mmmm 326 miles from where we're staying to Monaco, might just drop in).

Is there any car-related help or advice we can offer.......

I'll definitely make a donation and ask my company to sponsor them, (but have no idea if this will work).

Anybody else?

There is close to 30 teams taking part, we are hoping to visit the nurburgring during our return trip, I think we may need to remove the roof box for our lap!!!
Are there any problems we can expect from a Peugeot 2l petrol that's done 155000 miles for a trip of approx 3000 miles??!!

If you're taking it round the Ring then you'll want to pack some spare brake pads and discs. Also, make sure the car has new anti-roll bar drop-links fitted before you set off on your epic and highly commendable journey - these are not the most sturdy of components and are the most likely things to fail, leading to suspension problems.

The engines in these things are solid, bullet-proof lumps. As long as the timing belt/belt tensioners/water pump have been replaced reasonably recently, you shouldn't have any problems with the engine.

We've changed the timing belt and water pump, not considered the anti roll bars but as you can imagine funds are tight!

Thanks for the info!

Nice job on the respray, and a good choice of colour!

Serious about some spare discs and pads for the Nurburgring. Unless you're driving it like a total granny, if you go round the ring a few times, you'll need new pads at the very least, and your discs could show signs of cracking as stock discs are not intended for track conditions.

The droplinks are, thankfully, cheap components. I don't know how easy they are to replace, but if you are able to do it yourselves then at least you won't have to worry about the garage bills (like the less mechanically-inclined of us - myself included - need to)

We've several different options, the ring is just one at the moment! I'd rather take a sports car around there personally!! We had the paint job done professionally at a brilliant knock down price by cheshire accident management. I'll look into the drop links and see if we can get them as a charitable donation! Fortunately one of our team is a mechanic so labour charges aren't an issue!!!

Good to hear you have help from a mechanic.
It's true that the drop links don't last, but even if you can't find a charitable donation, they're only £10 a pair from ebay. I swapped mine out the other week, as it's only 4 bolts and 15 mins of a job :)
I'll have an ask round some potential sponsors..

That would be absolutely fantastic, can you PM your number and we could pick them up this week?

Many Thanks!

As the others have said, petrol engined 406's are pretty indestructable. Assuming you've done / are doing the standard service stuff, the only other points I'd check on are making sure your rad fan(s) work 100%, as you'll be giving it some welly up a hill or two..... (In normal service, these cars can go for years without needing them). and swap the aux. drive belt if it looks at all tired, as if it fails there's a chance of it taking out the cambelt too.

If you add coolant, be aware they're a bugger to bleed - 2 or 3 bleed screws hidden here and there. Some people swear by topping up with the o/s/f wheel on the kerb to make the header tank high enough for gravity to help.

It'll want fairly high tyre pressures when loaded - sticker on my doorpost says 2.3 Bar front / 3.2 rear - I tend to settle for a little bit less, as it feels better.

  406s now qualify as bangers

4 nuts & probably 4 torx bits to hold the ball pins, depending on manufacturer. Worst case scenario is the nuts are seized & the torx round off and then it's angle grinder time, however usually they're changed too often to get that bad but you never know. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10065&p=90084&hilit ... ink#p90191 Or you could just put up with the bonking

Like many cars these days, UK 406s seem to have a fondness for breaking road springs. Mainly the front and, almost always, while stationary. If you're driving on European roads it's probably not such a worry but it might be worth checking how rusty they are. viewtopic.php?f=27&t=13100&p=119844&hil ... st#p119844

Umm, 406 handbrakes are rubbish. Not much you'll be able to do about that, apart from carry a brick...

Other than the usual service stuff I can't think of anything else you'd specifically need to think about. Hey, it's not like you're driving to Mars :cheesy:

All the best!

People mention drop links failing on the 406 all the time but the reason is they replace the standard ones which have been fine for 100k+ with cheap ones from motorfactors.
If you get a new set of links from Peugeot or at least find a decent brand then there is no reason why a new set shouldn't do another 100k+!

As said the petrol 406's are indestructable and will just go on forever.
I'm assuming as you've had all the belts done the car will have been given a full service before hand? have you done the gearbox oil? Worth mentioning because Peugeot gearboxes tend to fail if you replace the oil with anything other than Peugeots own oil.
