Been a few weeks now (lots of stuff been happening), but the long & short of it is that the BMW sold Jubilee weekend & I had to spend a few weeks using Mum's Mondy while I searched for the new family wheels. Was actually quite particular about what I was looking for, but as the weeks went by & the search was fruitless I ended up having to settle a little.

Anyway, here it is on the day I brought it home:

Engine cover was present, but I had to remove it as it was only held on with 2 dampers & was chafing one of the hoses. Got serviced a couple of weeks ago & got another couple of dampers put on, but now don't have enough top clips:

This light crazing effect appears in a few places on the bodywork, but no signs of shoddy respray anywhere. In fact the whole driver's side rear panel is a bit iffy as the paint is very rough at the rear pillar (but not on the bootlid) & there are also some signs of rust starting at the very edges of the wheelarch. Any ideas?

Interior comes with worn out door handles as standard. Replacements in the correct colour are nearly £20 each! Plain old plastic van items are less than £15 posted for the pair, so ordered a set & fitted them a couple of weeks ago. May not look as pretty at first, but they'll certainly stay presentable for longer:

Folded the rear seat down to find that I couldn't get it back up as the centre seatbelt jammed. Should have learnt from my old 406 to pull some out before folding. Unbolted the seats so that I could get the backrest vertical again & the seatbelt came out again. Something to do with ball bearings I'm told:

I originally looked to spend up to £4k for a low mileage one in near mint condition, but then found that hardly any have air con, so ended up settling for this one with 95k, the all important air con, a newly fitted timing belt & water pump & 15months warranty for £3200. However, my hatred of used car traders has gathered more momentum as my plan of buying from a dealer & having a little more comeback was dealt a blow when an issue surfaced after 2 weeks of ownership.

When I first looked at the car before buying, the blower was permanently on full blast & couldn't be turned down. One of the conditions of sale was that the blower controls would get fixed. When I picked the car up a week later, there was a set of heater controls sat on the passenger seat (which the salesman said was the old set) & they seemed to be working as the blower could now be turned up & down. However, a few days later I had my first drive of it in the dark & found that I have no illumination on the controls at all. This was in addition to the fact that the hot/cold control would not turn all the way round to full cold without springing back.

After 2 phone calls to the car sales which ended in "I'll get back to you" I phoned them back the morning before it went for a service to ask if they were going to get their garage to fix the problem (since it obviously stemmed from them not doing the job right the first time) or whether they were happy to let my guy do it & save me having to drive an hour up the road to Bracknell. Rather than the standard "I'll get back to you" fobbing off, this conversation resulted in the salesman using the also standard "what do you expect from a 10 year old car", "I'm not making any promises" & finally "Well it's working now isn't it?" to which I replied that it wasn't if the cold control was springing back. He ended up hanging up the phone in a hissy fit, & I've now ended up footing the bill for my guy to have a look at the controls.

When I picked it up after the service, the specialist had managed to sort out the hot/cold control (the other guys hadn't attached the cable correctly), but said that he couldn't get the illumination working. He'd removed all of the bulbs without actually having to remove the panel & said that all 3 that he removed were blown, but the new ones that he fitted weren't lighting up either. He suspects that there may be a short somewhere in the panel, but couldn't be sure as he hadn't previously experienced this in a Berlingo or Partner. He also said that if we need to replace the control panel it will be a bit more of a job than what he did as the cables are a pig to do when completely removing it. He also managed to get my front foglights working as it turns out that the COMM2000 wasn't correctly configured - thought the stalks were suspiciously tight feeling & fresh looking.

As it turns out I may have found the problem when I fitted my Sony MP3 player. The rear of the heater controls has space for 2 plugs. One small square one that seems to be part of the recirc control (as it says air recirc on the reverse of the panel where the plug goes) & another longer rectangular slot. When I reached down the back of my heater controls in the car I found that I have something in the small square socket, but nothing in the other slot & also can't find any loose plugs or wiring hanging around anywhere. The specialist has a Berlingo van, so hopefully he'll be able to check where the plug originates in his van & find where it has gone in mine. It's due to go back to him soon as he said that the wheel cylinders are starting to leak (covered in the warranty so getting my money's worth) & that I have cruise control capability so he's going to configure it when I get the stalk.

Getting it to my standard of cleanliness is a long & arduous task (anybody that knew my old 406 can testify to that), but I did manage to get some odd time the other week to start work on it. So far I've got to the door shuts & interior:

Also fitted a new bracket that holds up the overhead shelf at the front. Plans for the future (apart from a lot of tidying) include some 15 or 16ins 306 or 406 alloys & some Berlingo Desire or XTR seats (for the armrests & picnic tables).

It is supposed to be an ice blue, but most of the time it just looks silver. My first choice would have been the really nice deep blue that they come in, but couldn't find one with air con & the 2.0 engine at the time (bloody loads now though).

It turned out that my horrible paint finish on the rear of the driver side is the result of a poor spray job in the past (even found a paint run on the tailgate). Managed to get a good price to get the rear panel & sliding door sprayed so took it. Downside is that the freshly painted panels look very slightly more blue from certain angles, & there's a wee bit of overspray under the sills (where the very bottom is black) & inside the rear arch liner. Still a massive improvement on before though.

Seeing as I now had one side stickerless, I took the opportunity yesterday to peel the other side off. No hairdryer required, just took a bit of fingernail work until I had enough to grip & each sticker came off in 1 piece. After a good scrub down with the tar & glue remover I had a clean stickerless passenger side. Also made sense to give it a fairly good clean & polish while I had a clear afternoon.

307 XSi gearknob fitted a couple of weeks ago. Might have to get a black leather gaiter to match though as it looks a little out of place with the dark grey of the standard item:

Unfortunately the 206 leather steering wheel didn't work out as the airbag light was flashing once fitted, but I'm still unsure if it was an issue with the airbag itself (as the blue plug didn't seem as tight a fit as it was in the standard Partner airbag) or a configuration issue as the 206 bag requires the blue & green plugs (dual trigger) whereas the Partner one doesn't. Still have a couple of alternative ideas though.

Rear still looking a little too basic for my liking as I'd still like to get my hands on a Berlingo Desire interior with the picnic tables & front armrests & I'm also keeping an eye out for the little trim panels that go over the top of the sliding door trim panels to give them a little bit of padding:

Hey :) long time no see.

That looks like a Siemens 90 :cheesy: Installed in a characteristically immaculate motor
What does it feel like compared to the 110? Albeit in a completely different motor and no doubt with a very different gearbox.
I always find it funny how many parts there are in common between different motors from the same manufacturer.

Why did the BMW have to go?
Not an obvious replacement. Why did you decide on a van?

Wouldn't call it immaculate. It's actually quite depressing to compare the condition of the Partner to my old 406 which got sold for little over half as much as I paid for this one, but I'm treating it very much as a work in progress. Might take a while though as I don't have as much spare time in the day as I used to since I changed job. BMW had to go as it still couldn't break the 20mpg barrier around town with me, plus it was nowhere near as practical as we're used to as the boot is completely sealed off from the cabin leaving no option for larger items. Was also starting to be a bit of a hooligan with the extra power.

Decided on a Partner/Berlingo as I'd always quite liked them for their basic, but practical charm. Did look at some other motors before I found this one though, including a supposedly immaculate & original 2.2HDi estate in white which had loads of parking dents, a badly resprayed front bumper & floppy indicators.

In terms of feel, it's definitely slower than the 110, but in all honesty I never thought the 110 was all that quick as it's just so flat after 3k rpm. May invest in the remap for this one as it is probably a bit too underpowered. My old Xantia was only a 90 & I don't remember that feeling too sluggish, but that was a Bosch & it wasn't carrying something with all the aerodynamic qualities of a breeze block. Gearchanges take a little bit of effort too as they can be a bit jerky, but that could be down to the solid flywheel.

I'd expect it to have a different -- much shorter -- transmission to the 406 (and the 406 90 is slightly shorter in 5th than the 110). Therefore no surprise that it's slower. And yeah, there's no point revving over 3k :roll:

It certainly looks very useful, and I bet it's a lot easier getting the occupants of the back in and out now it's so much higher up.

The salesman didn't do you any favours :x I hate people like that - they're your bestest mate right up until you hand over the folding and then it's..............Image it's actually quite dangerous to have unlit controls (distracting for the driver trying to see what's what).

I think you'll manage ok now though and if the car fits the bill then you can't put a price on that can you.

Had it 8 months now & I have to be honest, I've done bugger all to it. Spent so long looking for one & all it's ever got out of me is general servicing & a set of 306 alloy wheels. A little gutted that I sold the old Nautilus wheels though as they would have bolted straight on.

The gearchanges are a bit smoother now, but apparently it's a side effect of a cable operated clutch when you're too use to driving hydraulic clutches. It's stiff as hell & although I've got used to it, whenever I have to go to Welly in the boss's cars (Quashqai or Bluemotion Passat) it feels 10 times heavier when I drive home from work by comparison. On the plus side though it's as cheap as hell to run & little man still loves the sliding doors as they're so easy for him to get in & out of.

The returning need for a 7 seater means that it'll probably going before it hits the 12mths ownership milestone. Had a look at an 806 the other day & it seems like a good compromise as it still has the sliding doors & isn't as over-complicated as the C8/807, but it would be a bit more of a diesel-drinker & it isn't like it'll be easy to store the 6th & 7th seats for everyday use. They're huge!

Nice motor!
I must admit I been in a Citroen Berlingo and I can't quite believe how tall they think people are :lol:
Loads of headroom, lots of space - looks like you have a few jobs to do on it but that's half the fun isn't it? :)

Not a huge amount to do on it to be honest. Got a new resistor for the blower to go in (stops it being constantly on), but I'm not going to tart it up anymore. I know I'm going to need a 7 seater so, I'm not planning on spending too much more on it now. Not when I know I'm going to lose a packet on it already. At least the cheap running costs recoup some of the £1500 I'll be down when I px it.

If money was no object & I had the time & skills, I'd love to keep it as a second car & tidy the bodywork up & even transplant a 2.2 HDi or fit intercoolers to get it up to the power figures that the 306 owners boast. But factor in the lack of parking& the cost of insuring a second car & it just isn't going to happen.

As far as the 2.2 136 goes, I think the 2.0 136 makes an ideal breakfast, (but I would like a 6-speed).

& my money's on you being the first one on here to do it. All you need is the gearbox from a 2003-2006 C5 2.2 (before they started using the 172 twin turbo).

Yep, recent couple of threads on the Coupe Club about fitting a 6 speed to the DW12. I think the gearbox code is 20MB04, but the main difficultly is getting hold of one!

I started looking into whether or not the more common and cheaper 20MB02, was maybe comapatible, (if it has a hole for mounting the road speed sensor), but haven't managed to find the sensor on mine / compare with a 407 yet........

Haven't seen a suitable C5 'box for < £400, so far. :roll:

Option b). Suss out whether it's possible to reprogram the 'dark side' of the engine ecu to calculate speed off the ABS sensors, (May have to bottom this one out in any case if I'm ever to realise my objectives of 40 mph/1000 in top and 200 horses, (if there's enough of them left now). :roll:

Interesting, no mention of that box over on the Coupe Club. Perhaps packaging is an issue on the Coupe? Just from photos, they look very similar, have you worked out what the actual differences are?

I've had a standing search on eBay for the 20MB04 box for about 3 months now, and not a single one has appeared.

If the road speed setting is a configuration option, then we've got a chance. However, I suspect that it's not part of a configurable map, but instead part of the actual binary executed on the micro at runtime. Even if you could download the binary (I doubt this is possible), reverse engineering it would be practically impossible.

I'm keeping an eye on this for if/when I get my mitts on a HDi Coupe...
