Re: The 406 Replacement
With all the sh*te weather we've had over the past few weeks, it's been very difficult to get out & give the beast a good clean, but managed to get a few hours of dry weather this week & managed to go to town. You might have to flick back to page 1 to see the difference, but here she is after a good going over:
I did pop the headlights off the other day to dry the lenses out, but wasn't able to get them fully dried as the moisture around the indicators is impossible to get to. Think they really need a couple of days in a warm dry atmosphere.
Remember the grubby looking engine bay?
These bits were the worst. Were absolutely covered in crap & leaves. Also found 2 air pipes disconnected. Unfortunately reconnecting them didn't improve fuel consumption
Here's the really bad bit though. Remember the rusty bootlid? It wasn't alone. Knew there was a reason I liked Peugeots & Citroens. You may find bits of trim & suspension isn't to the highest quality, but at least it isn't rotting away from inside. These were on the A-pillars:
Another above the windscreen:
& I really wasn't too chuffed to find the passenger door like this - not sure how well it shows in the picture for someone that hasn't already seen it in the flesh. A good 8ins of light bubbling under the paint. At least the rest aren't the same though:

Re: The 406 Replacement
I have got some Gliptone stuff that cost £10 that I used on my old SRi seats, but when I cleaned the ones in the Beemer I was using up some cheapy crap from Wilkinsons. As long as it's creamy & softens them a bit it doesn't really matter what you use. I've got a load of baby lotion upstairs that I'll use up next before I start using the expensive stuff.
As it stands at the mo, I don't want to use too much of the good stuff on it as it is really starting to look like a short term ownership until I can find a decent HDi. Berlingo/Partner is the favourite at the moment due to the simplicity & the sliding doors, but I'd also consider another 406, 206 or 307SW, Xsara or Picasso Exclusive.

I know it's ridiculous. Checked the premium the other day & this thing costs £15 a year more than my old 406 would...lozz wrote: id love one but, the price of insurance for them is out of my league,

Decisions, decisions.....
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Re: The 406 Replacement
anyone know if the 318 CI s are any good,
ive been looking into getting one, got offerd just over 1 and half k for the lag as trade in, very tempted,
but thought id do some research first, they want 6k for the bm and its on a 03 plate,
seems pricey /over priced altho thats with getting it on finance price,

Re: The 406 Replacement
A 318 of that age would have the 2.0 4 cylinder engine & to be fair, it's a bloody good engine. Some may say that you should get the 6 cylinder, but all the 2.0 318s I've driven have been quick enough. £6k is very overpriced though, unless it is totally immaculate with every extra on it & less than 50k on the clock.lozz wrote:anyone know if the 318 CI s are any good,

Re: The 406 Replacement
I think your car looks great, the color is amazing, like the darker colors on the car.
Interrior of the BMW is really stylish, all in leather, black, shiny.
Dont worry about the rust,as i can see, there are a few dots of rust on it,that shouldnt be a financial problem to solve.
At the end,you can always come back in our family, the 406 family

Re: The 406 Replacement
The little rusty bits are really just the final straw. The fuel consumption is the real killer for me as I do mostly short trips.Ares wrote:I think your car looks great, the color is amazing, like the darker colors on the car.

The thought has crossed my mind. Funnily enough I was going to look at a 2.2 this afternoon, but a combination of factors prevented me from going. It would however appear that somebody is watching over me though. When I phoned about it I got told that it had only towed a small camping trailer (I'd asked because the towbar looked hefty & it was being sold to make way for a campervan), but funnily enough I was looking on Google street view this afternoon (I often do as the surrounding area can be a good indicator as to how well looked after things are) & spotted a boat on a trailer in the front garden.Ares wrote: At the end,you can always come back in our family, the 406 family
Methinks a clutch change could be on the cards for that one sooner rather than later...

Re: The 406 Replacement
A manual would probably be a better choice anyway. As nice as the autobox is on mine, it really does cripple the economy around town. A manual box is more in keeping with the 3 series character too.lozz wrote:cheers.

Re: The 406 Replacement
Iagree mate,
autos can make a car be abit thirsty compared to manual, im not a fan of autos but there good for long motorway runs,
we looked at a few bmws and they where all autos no manuals, they must be more popular,
