Sounds to me like he shifted it on quick when he realised it was ill... Mains or big ends? The smoking may just be lack of servicing, if it's not chucking it out on start up then I'd think the rings are ok (compression test?) I hate paranoia motoring too but perhaps if you're more philosophical about it, it won't be so much of a nightmare.

Oh yes, oil pressure, does it even have an oil light?

What did it sound like when you 1st drove it,
obviously if it had a Growl you wouid of heard it,

What does this knock sound like is it Heavy or a tap,

I heard no untoward noises when I viewed or test drove the car, Its more of a rattle than a knock, it defo sounds bottom end, when you rev it without the oil cap on its much louder

The oil light flickers on and off very quickly when its at idle, although it does idle a little low. I always thought when the big ends went on a car it woul smoke more than I am at the moment (20 a day  ) but there really isint that much smoke coming out, no more than usual if you rev the guts off any car

I think what I will do is do a quick video tomorrow on a cold start and a little rev up so you can hear what I'm on about, and I will start a new thread as I don't want to hijack Bailes thread any more than I have

I did ponder posting my woes on the FFOC but it don't feel as friendly as it does on here, and it costs to join  that's why I will remain an active member even when I don't have a 406 as I'm still very fond of them

A rattle is better than a knock
if its top end might be cam shaft,

check the other things too as noise travels : aux belt tensioners cam belt tensioners,
or worst case low oil preasure not enough oil getting up to top end,

it be worth sorting that engine if bottom end is ok,

get a peice of wood and press it against the sump and get you ear on the end of it and have a listen,
or a long screw driver just keep it away from moving parts

I will do mate, It certainly might be worth getting the sump off to see if I can get away with replacing the shells, even paying a garage and hours labour to do a proper diagnosis before I spend hundreds on a replacement engine

Quite a few have said the shells tbh, as I know these are designed to fail first if starved of oil etc as a last warning before things let go altogether

it all depends on how long its been Starved of oil for,
you couid replace the shells and it couid have a rattle somewhere else,
best to let someone whos honnest to have a listen some garages will tell you its more than it is to grab more work out of it,

check the sumps on the focus too: there Nasty tin things that rust and piss oil out,

A rattle that gets louder with the 710 cap off sounds like cam or tappets to me, then I can't stick my ear to it from here. It might follow with the oil starvation though, hydraulic tappets run on fresh air might not be up to much. Same for a camshaft with square lobes.

There are two versions of the 1.6 SE engine.
Blacktop, which is the one I got.
And Silvertop. You can tell by weather you have a plastic or metal rocker cover.

Yeh tey're weak, the blacktop had a few improvments because the silvertops were throwing rods all over the place.
Try get a blacktop one!
Saying that I know of a blacktop that recently chucked a rod too. One reason I kinda of want to get rid of mine.
With the XUD you felt like you could abuse it and it would never bite back, this engine feels very fragile but it does sound very nice above 4.5k :)

Mines the silvertop which i'm led to believe the earlier Zetec s lump or the FYDA engine

My mate over the road knows a lad that has a later 1.6 blacktop in his shed that he might be able to get for me cheap, its a good runner aparently with reasonably low miles

If I could get it cheap enough would it drop straight in mine? no faffing on with ecu's etc I looked at my mates blacktop 1.6se in his 54 plater and all the ancilleries look the same and the engine looks pretty much the same aside from the blacktop obviously

just a thought,
check up on what the last of the ford Escroat had in them im pretty sure the last of them
had thems 1.6 engines in and if thats the case id find an escroat theyre pennys to pick up,

well ive done abit of research it might need more tho,
the differnce is the rocker cover as far as ican work out,
the escroat that had the later engine was the finese,

theres a couple of these lumps on ebay ones at £3 at the moment so there going for nothing
well worth doing some research
