Re: My SRi Estate

Post by no2lurch »

thought i would post on here to let everyone know my experience with HIDs on my D9.

before i go on, i don’t want this to find out if my car will now fail its mot or will i get pulled by the police, i merely want to let people know my experience.

the kit i purchased was a H7R whcih is supposed to be for non projector equipped front headlights, and the temperature colour is 10,000K.

i got these in the post this morning and set about fitting them at lunch. took my time and the passenger side went in taking 30 mins and the drivers aside went in taking about 10 mins. i also swapped the side lights for white leds.

i secured the ballasts thus... drivers side is cable tied inside the ecu box and the passenger side is now cable tied to the inside of the battery box.

the kits are simply plug and play really. I have now drilled 25mm holes in the covers for the back of the light units so i could thread the wires through.

conclusion... this colour is quite blue, but in comparison it to my partners HIDs on her ST170 which were factory fitted itrs not too bad. there is a definate beam patern on a wall when parked in front of and there is also a definite pattern on the floor in the dark. the main beams are standard bulbs but are visibly higher than the 'new' pattern. Glare seems to be none which I am very pleased about, but please remember, these HIDs are for reflector lights NOT projectors.

with regards to the mot, i may have a word with the tester prior to testing next year and if he is not liking them, i will disconnect the HIDs and put standrad bulbs in for the test.

other things i have done to the car are fitted a front strut brace (no fowling on the bonnet) and shortened the gear lever.

I'm very happy with the car and with me drving it economically, i am averaging 33mpg whcih is goo i think for a big engined petrol car.

thought i'd update...

having had some very worrying electrical issues (solved from members on the forum) the car has had a new battery, and i have removed and cleaned up the battery earth point under the battery tray.

i have also removed the strut brace and HIDs (as part of the problem solving above) and these will be sold as i need the cash. when i have some funds, i'll get some whiter bulbs again.

I replied to your pm. I never had any issues with the 10,000 bulbs. Followed a cop car for a few miles too with them. Maybe I was lucky tho. Anyway it's personal choice. I had 4,300 bulbs in my BMW e30 and they were great.

That little splitter looks good on there Neil - subtle & purposeful. Almost looks factory standard.

What's wrong with yours - are they all scratched up, cracked, or full of moisture?

You can repair them if they're scratched or full of condensation.

Hmmm.... remove them from the car, and check to see if there's anywhere moisture could be getting in (cracks, splits in the seal between the lens and the plastic body).

Try splitting the lens off them (in a dry environment) and reseal them together (Tiger Seal?)
