Old Denty . DEAD. 21/03/10

Post by VND »

First of all, thank you everyone for being so friendly and helpfull.
Had a lot of great advice here even in the short time Ive been signed up.

Things are not going well with my new (well, old but free) 406 D8 2.0 LX

First day I had it, the handbrake cable snapped. The car rolled down a hill and into the back of another car. (casnm you spot the 2nd hand bumper?!!
Then the Clutch cable gave up and it got stuck in gear. Cue new clutch cable.
Then when it was up on ramps, I happened to notice the MA-HOOOSIVE hole in the passenger sill.
Oh and the front Aunties Roll Bar drop links both need done.
And the rear Rose Bushes.
And it needs a New Headlight.
And A Tyre.
And Wheel Ballancing.
And the tax and test is due next month. JOY!!! :(

Free car suddenly = very expensive.

Anyway, I love driving it, and heres some pics.

Im poor boy but try and take good car of my cars, im not so interested in consmetic bling though. So this cheeky tinker will be hopefully be getting enough love to keep it going for many years to come. But its probably remain looking as rough as it does now.

Many thanks all. :cheesy:

New bumper you say?

Can't say I noticed

That rust hole is a bit weird for a 406 but our man Wiggy will be able to shed some light on that......

Thanks for showing us your trusty charriot and hopefully you'll be able to fix most of the stuff cheaply and easily.

Sounds right.
The boot floor was holding water, presumably from a seal leak, so Ive drilled a drain hole to let it run through.
The carpets dry, but there was a lot of water sitting down there.

Wiggy will confirm but I think the jacking points get mangled up and stop the cills draining and there's not a great deal of rustproofing stuff inside the cills :?

Ive still got a load of BiltHamber chemicals and flexi-tube directive cavity wax left over from previous ninja sill-attacks, so I'll do the best I can shore them up agains future water incursions. :supafrisk:

To be honest, Im thinking about giving the thing back.
I took this 406 on because I was sick of re-attatching the exhaust onty a lowered but immaculate Volvo 360.
The 360 was 20 odd years old and never gave a pinch of bother save for me knocking the exhaust off every month.

This 406 seems like its litterally dying in my hands. Crumbling like a Hob-Nob.
And Ive only had it 8 days.

It does sound like it's reached that point where it'll spend more time in bits than on the road :(

Thankfully, there's plenty of 406s out there for trade, spares, repairs, or in the scrapyards to keep our cars running for quite a while. See if you can spot a nicer, more reliable, less rust-ridden 406 on Autotrader/eBay in your area. Some of them go for less than £500.

Your own car could possibly be repaired, but with a big old rust-hole like that, I'd be less inclined to put my hand in my wallet, and I'd be looking to cut my losses instead. You might be able to break it for parts and use the money you gain on getting a more complete/reliable 406.

Car is now dead.
Lost power on a run today.

Can't find the problem with my basic mechanical skills.
I'm giving up.

I've had it less than a month and:
the handbrake has snapped
the clutch cable has gone, and been replaced
I've replaced a headlight
I've replaced 5 tyres
I've replaced the arb drop links
I've replaced the front bumper
it now has a serious engine fault
it needs extensive welding on the pass sill front and back.
It needs rear bushes replacing
And it needs an mot.

I give up.
I'm a grand down on a free car.

Worst (and newest, lowest milage) car i've ever had.
Would I have another?
No.

Thanks for all your help everyone.
You can stick a fork in me. I'm done.
