Discuss the 406's Bodywork stuff in here (what parts fit what, what can be interchanged with what etc etc).

colour match?

Post by johntl »

Every time I get some rattle spray cans from halfords/car shops the colour match is poor, I've seen on the interweb places that mix the paint to the code are they any better?
We all know how the paint fades over the years !!
Or is the only way to get a good match is have it done by a sprayshop???

Hi.
Imho theres nothing wrong with halfords colour match tin's
as you say its the age of the car, or paint fade due to the sun..

Best bet is find a paint specialist they will make you 'proper tins up. Take the car along with you or take a peice of it in, (fuel flap) etc
sounds daft but they will match it better that way rather than just making atin up off paint code,

its normaly around 13-15 quid atin mind,

If you use a decent paint colour restorer ( Ferecla G3 Ultra ) or similar, it will bring the old paint up to nearly match the new paint.... 8)

thanks for the feedback,
I will have to try and find a paint specialist to match the car , the colour is the diablo red which is pearlesent, I have had to rub down the bottom of the n/s/f door as it was rusty all all along the bottom which is unusual for a 406, all other doors ok + small bits where the lacquer peeled off ! The lacquer can be a right pain :frown:

Cheers

if its just the bottom of the door & it wont match,
id blow the paint in to the other door, if you get what imean?,
and then (g3) the rest of the car,

leave the paint for a few days before getting the laquer on.

You can use white it'll make it a brighter shade, if your realy bothered you could find out what's under the std paint
(rub it down until you find the primer colour).
B.T.W theres at least two Diablo red N.S.F doors for sale on the bay a the mo ones £40 + p&p the others £50 + p&p but I'm sure you could work out a deal
In my experiance it's very hard to stop a door rusting once it has started, they tend to rust from the inside out  in a year to two years your back to square
one (minus all the time, money & effort) :(

Lacquered paints don't suffer with fade too badly, especially metallic and perlesant paints.
G3 won't restore a lacquer coated paint either as it will remove clear lacquer and not the base coat. It's the base coat that would have faded.
The main issue with colour names and codes is there can be thousands of shades of one colour and hundreds of shades of a colour code.
If you take the car to a car paint specialist they can come out with a colour chart of all the different shades of your colour code and get it bang on!
