Front Foglights discoloured

Post by dawsondj01 »

Decided over the last few days to clean up the foglights. They had gone really white and manky.

sorry about picture quality.
I started by removing the foglights from the bumper. And took the actual bulb holder out.

Even with my big hands i could still squeeze them into the lamp unit and using some g4 polish i could polish up the glass from the inside. All the white came straight off and they looked great. I also purchased some H1 LED bulbs to fit.
to do this i found that they didnt quite fit the lamp unit so i had to file the hole slightly larger to allow the bulb to fit. I also had to remove the inner piece of tin as the bulb was too long and caught on it. (I dont drive with my fogs on so wont blind anyone)

I then rebuilt the lamp unit and refit to the car looking super clean and put out excellent light on a night.

match really well with the HID KIT. LED sidelights and LED main beam.

That's great, I think every single 406 suffers the same and yes I always thought it couldn't be fixed easily. Nice little touch.

Splendid, and not a single piece of spaghetti in sight :supafrisk:

Are the LEDs any good?

Nice job, makes a huge difference to the front of the car. I did mine recently...they had the same cruddy white deposits on the inside of the glass.

One point though, by removing that metal deflector, won't the spread of light be uncontrolled now?

I missed that bit, yes it will affect the beam pattern (and not in a good way to be fair) that 'cap' over the bulb is to control the focal point within the lens, without it you pretty much end up with a Torch effect.

Yeah that is true didnt really think about that. But also at the same time i dont use the foglights much at all and with the upgrade to hids then the fogs are more for looks now :D

Oh well, maybe just call them 'Daytime Running Lights' we all know they won't be anywhere near as bright as a Shitroen DS3's :frown:

I've just had my head under the front of mine, and there seems virtually no access to the foglights.
And the Haynes says remove the front bumper to get at them.

Is that right... ?

There's an access panel in the bumper underneath as I remember.

All i had in the way was the wheel arch liner on both side. The o/s was harder to do due to the washer bottle and it required a little persuation past the bumper but once wheel arch liner was pulled back out of the way there is 3 torx30 screws holding the lamp unit in.
