sump guard?

Underneath the engine of my 97 diesel there seem to be two pieces of metal / plastic (respectively). I believe that neither is original since they have been messed around with to fit. I had an oil leak for a while and so one, which is coated with thick foam, is oiled up to the point of uselessness. So - does anyone know what these parts are actually called and does anyone have them for sale? Here in Hungary, they would apparently cost me an arm and half a leg...

There's a big, crappy lump of plastic. Pug seem to call it "ENGINE+GEAR-BOX SOUND PROOFING" if it extends all the way under, or "UNDERENGINE SHIELD" if it's just at the front (and if that's what my Pug has then it doesn't actually go under the engine much at all). There's this thread going on at the moment viewtopic.php?f=1&t=20910 where mmm has a similar problem to you in that the car was built before the 1998 RPO which means you can't use one from a later car.

There is a proper (or what seems to be) sump guard which I posted the diagram of a few times, here viewtopic.php?f=1&t=11596&hilit=+guard+ ... al#p102737 but it's still not very cheap

Thanks, Steve, that's very useful. I might end up getting something made as a sump guard - might be cheaper in the end and the sound proofing is hardly necessary.

I was worrying last night that perhaps it'd just be a thin bit of steel and I was wondering how I'd go about reinforcing it but it's MASSIVE it weighs 12.4Kg Surprisingly nicely made too.

I've been a-measurin'. It's such a damn weird shape I think anyone would be hard pushed to make another one, unless they had the car raised up so they could do some measuring on the actual car and make it just using my pics as a guide. I also got fed up with how long it takes to put text and stuff on a pic using psp - easier to just draw it on freehand.

How am I meant to measure that?

The spacers measure 30mm outside, 15mm inside and are 18mm tall.

I've no idea what the slots and holes are for, maybe this will become more apparent when I (try to) fit the thing.

I should also measure the brackets but dammit, they're in the yoyo and it's pi$$ing down

I guess I should paint it really, what it's painted with now looks like the stuff panels come primed in, so it's probably water-based and/or porous. Plus it's a bit knocked about, the transport label on it is in German so I suspect it's one of those things someone's ordered in error and it's been kicking around the warehouse for 10 years, waiting for some madman to order it... I think I'll paint it a nice, vibrant... BLACK. Or maybe I'll just ask the guy in the paint shop what he's got a lot of hanging around. VW blue again?

On the right: 692373 (x6) - SELF LOCKING SELF-TAP SCREWS DIAM 10X150-45

These were rather pricey, if I had a decent hardware store here I probably would have just got one of each then matched them up. If I had a decent hardware store here... I could see myself ending up touring Zagreb looking for the damn things so I thought I may as well pay through the nose and have done.

Guess what I completely failed to fit to my D9 yesterday

I was expecting some issues but... none of the fixings are there for any of it. The 4 nuts that I was maybe expecting to be in the subframe aren't, the one cage nut under the radiator which holds the weird beak-like thing at the front isn't there (bolt not even mentioned in Service Box) and, last but waayyyyyyyyyyy from being least, there is nothing on the chassis rails to bolt the brackets to at all, no holes, nada.

After a good few hours of Googling I've found out who makes subframe cage nuts, they're M10 versions of the M12 cage nuts that nobody can find to hold towbars on. It's a company in France called Restagraf and, after careful measurement, these http://www.restagraf.com/en/catalogue/t ... rence/316/ seem to be the ones. Unfortunately I can't find any retailers that will sell me any outside France (and Finland, oddly enough). So it's back to Service Box, where I've found this kind of stuff on the fixings & fastenings bit. Unfortunatly there are two that seem to have the same dimensions, however the metal thickness quoted doesn't match up to the ones on Restagraf

Without a micrometer I suspect the subframe to be about 2mm but I don't have anything I can get in there to measure it properly. However, seeing as how these things are a quid an a half each, I'm thinking I could buy all 8. 12 quid? Pfft, I'd pay a tenner each if I knew they were the right ones

I also found the nut for the front crossmember on Restagraf, but like everything else, nothing tallies up with it on Service Box. However, looks like I have the choice of two, one of which won't order.

Now the brackets. I could have done with a closer look but by this time I could tell Mika, the mechanic, had had enough of my arsing around and wanted me gone so he could get his next customer's car up on the ramp. The trouble is there's nothing on the chassis legs there, just the corrugations for the crumple zone. So what if I just weld the buggers on? The plate will still unbolt if anything needs to be got to. Hmm, on the other hand the 4 bolts holding it to the subframe would be good enough without the brackets...

I'm impressed, sounded like a right faff though but looks like its well fixed now. It'll be important to keep greasing/copper-slipping those freds though as they'll want to corrode faster than a Ford Cortina at the seaside.

Have you noticed a reduction in engine noise? (standing beside the car like).

It would be a lot less faffing about if I did another one...

Couldn't say if I noticed from the outside but I noticed a marked reduction in noise driving it. I can see why the plastic one would reduce noise but I thought a metal one would increase it if anything. Unless I'm comparing it to the yoyo but I doubt it.

Oh, and on a completely different subject, you remember that LED reversing light bulb I fitted? I still didn't get around to doing the other side but as I backed it into the garage in the twilight I finally realised that it's actually a lot brighter than the other side. It confused me for a moment because I thought that I'd missed the garage or something
