406 tow bar cage nuts

Post by Karaokeb »

I have a second hand tow bar for a 406 estate and need the 4 cage nuts that go into the chassis members. I have tried my local Peugeot garage and they cannot identify the part no. Does any body know the part number or where the cage nuts can be obtained?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The cage nuts come with the tow bar, not the car. Try towbar makers

:arrowu:
My 406 came from the factory with a tow bar fitted,
and it as a pug logo on it ,

so surely they can stock the bolts if they supply them

There's a few on Service Box, they're either supplied by Brink, Le Rapide or - (yes - ) Any idea which yours is?

Picks one at random...
Any of this look familiar?

Btw I seem to recall something on the coupé club yonks ago about the cage nuts and their dwindling availability but I'm not 100% sure that was what they were on about

or is it Bosal,

http://www.catalogue.bosal.com/pdf/pdf_mi/021341.pdf

the catalogue at bosal dot com gives out diagrams on other brandes of towbar too and by the looks of it the Dimensions on nuts & bolts and other parts -might be worth a look, :|

I'm in the same position.

I can source standard cage nuts but don't know how thick the chassis rails are, where the cage nuts are fitted, and haven't had the chance to attampt to measure it. Does anyone know how thick the rails are?

Once I know, I can get the cage nuts and will post the supplier details up here.

Do you mean width of the rails or the thickness of the metal itself?

The thickness of the metal, because cage nuts work across a range of panel thickness. For M10 cage nuts (as used in the rails to fit the towbar) the ranges are 1.0-1.7mm, 1.8-3.2, 3.3-4.7 and 4.8-6.2mm.

Update:
Just tried to measure but more than a tad tricky. However it looks like somewhere around the 1.7mm area, which might make sense, as the old 16 SWG is equivalent to 1.626mm. ANyway, I'll try the two smallest sizes of cage nut and see how it goes.

hi,
how'd you get on with the cage nuts?
im having a similar problem with a second hand towbar and no fittings.
i can get normal cage nuts easy enough but i think i need the special kind with a plate attached to them cos the towbar doesnt line up with the square hole where the cage nuts go but with a round hole adjacent to it. i think, im supposed to bolt the cage nut into the square hole and then bolt thru the plate into the round hole?
anyone know where i can get 6 of these things or am i going to have to glue the towbar on!!!!!??????????????????????????????????

Had to track down the correct type in the end. They slide into place through the rectangular hole and then clip into place. You need 4 of them. If you need cage nuts for the two fixings in the rear valance area, as opposed to the chassis rails, then these will be M12, not M10. On our estate there were nutserts in the panel, although they were covered by tape. When it comes to fitting I would loosely bolt the towbar in place through these two first, I found that worked best.

As for the fittings, try your local stockist for the make of towbar you have, or maybe purchase a full fitting kit. I'll also ask the company I got mine from to see if they have any more.

(Just got answer back, no more available from my source so looks like a fitting kit from one of the towbar manufacturers is your only option)

I managed to get the cage nuts for free from a german manufacturer in the end, very helpful people.
Some guy in northern ireland wanted to charge me 9 quid each for the captive nuts! Thats 54 quid for 6 nuts!
I think i would go without a towbar than be ripped off like that.

Now, as posted in another thread, to 7way bypass relay or not to 7way bypass relay! That is the question!
