Welcome to the 406 Owners Club (406oc.co.uk and pug406.co.uk). If you havn't registered, you can post in here, and find out what the site is all about!
Just got a 406 2.2 sri estate in silver on a 2000 W plate with 78k o clock. Its a 2 owner well lokked after one too.
I did a little research on it before hand and some places refer to it as being a turbo and other places say its a NA engine. Which is it for sure? It sure goes well anyhow especially since my last 5 cars ave been diesels inc one 406 estate 1.9 td.
I also know it's cheaper to get a custom built full stainless exhaust with sports cat fitted than get a genuine pug one as I cant see anywhere that stocks a pattern part for it. The full stainless system with cat was priced up at £499 fitted which aint bad really.
It's a very nice car and like it lots. The only rough thng is the alloys which all could do with a refurb, not really curbed but just all scabby and bubbled, but it is 8 yr old.

The 2.2 seems to be one of the rarer engines, so this may be why you're having troubling sorcing a 'zaust. Where exactly is everyone seeing the 2.2 has a turbo? 'cos where ever it is is nuts.
I think the turbo thing comes from dealers selling them as a turbo assuming that they are because the older one is a turbo. I assumed it was also then. The guy I got it from was not clued up about it and did not know if it did either. It did not feel like it was though, even though it drives very well.
It is a nice car though. I sold a much newer 1.9dci laguna to buy a cheaper car but this one feels better on the road and more modern, plus going from a 120bhp diesel to a 160bhp petrol is great. I have bought my last few cars with running costs in mind but not with this one! Though it gave me 41mpg on the drive home which was 200 mile trip so not bad for a big petrol really.

I want one!
As for the wheels, you can always get them refurbished.
I may just get the wheels done as it will be worth it. Not sure where is a good place with a decent price to get it done though. The chrome trim in the boot lid has gone white too so may have a look at a breakers to see if I can get one.

Good price you paid there
Yeah I thought a good price too. I did consider an HDI but this looked nicer and goes better but still gets a decent mpg when needed. I love the interior too.
It does need the air con servicing and it has not had the cam belt done so that is priority at 78k. I am not sure when it should have been done either. It does have a pug service history up to 55k then one independant stamp at 75k but no sign of any docs to say the cam belt has been done.
It would look better with a new chrome trim in the boot door black trim and the alloys refurbing but thats about it. Oh and I also get a brake fluid low warning every time I put the handbrake on but the fluids are fine so prob just a sensor on the bottle.
Not sure on the cambelt interval on yours - it will say in the handbook if you have one.
I'm affraid your air con may need a bit more than just a service. At 7/8 years old our condensors fail with astonishing accuracy at a garage this will be a £300.00 job and I'm guessing this maybe why your car came up for sale but fear not! the 406 climate control is absolutely fantastic so well worth fixing.
The back strip on the door is quite cheap, there's a thread somewhere here where member DaiRees changed this strip on his estate.
The "Brake Fluid Low" is just a little miro switch on the handbrake lever, we've all has thisat some point. My remedy is just to work the lever like a mad man for a minute it stops the fault for me

Thanks for that. Can the condensors be bought so I could fit it myself and is it a main dealer part only? I would like it working as I had climate control just like it in a rover 75 which was fantastic also. I will have a play with the switch for the brake fluid prob so hopefully sort that out. The cam belt is gonna get done in the next 2 weks for sure. I have been given a price of £175 for the cambelt at a garage owned by my bro in laws father in law, lol. I get a better price usually. He also does air con servicing and charges £80 usually for full service and re gas but will do it for £40 but if the condensor needs replacing it's no point for now.
Yeah you can buy and fit your own condenser. Helix seem to make most condensers but not exactly sure of the 406 make. I managed to wangle a 50/50 deal on my warrenty so paid £150.00 which I was happy with. Puggy fitted his own on here, he may give you some pointers.
Also note there is a pipe which can corrode at the bracket position below the battery and also one on the front cross member/bumper bar. Look for signs of green oily residue here.

The reason everyone thinks the 2.2 is turbocharged is because of the SRi badge. 90% of the SRis have the 2.0 turbo XU10J2TE engine, then pug decided to shove the 2.2 NA lump in while keeping the badge.
They also kept that vile seat/door card design too didn't they?
