Hi all, just a note to say hello. thought it was about time i joined the forum seeing as ive had my 406 for about 5 years!!
I never used to like french cars until i got the 406 (it was so cheap it was worth a go....the best and most reliable car ive had! a definate peugeot convert.

I'm sure many of us here have done exactly what you have done - bought a 406 as a stop gap/run around/ bargain car with little or no expectations, but found it an absolute joy to own, a very underrated car, and hung on to it..!

I've had a few 406 estates, all diesels and the latter two were 2.2hdi models that were 'tweaked' a little - resulting in a practical, reliable and comfortable car that was a bit of a sleeper...

Enjoy the car, feel free to have a look through the Knowledge Base on the home page for guidance if you have any issues - but you can always post something up if you need help, sympathy or simple moral support

As a side, if you add your location to your signature, maybe a member local to you could help out with diagnostic work etc, should the need arise.

Thanks for the welcome. I think it was a bargain when i think back. It had done 60k, full pug history, a great shade of met dark grey which really suits it, built in sat nav, climate control etc etc, no rust or damage all for £900. Ive now done 120k and all ive had to do is change the rear drop links and stabilizer bars, and replace the exhaust system. Also (apart from the auto lights) everything still works. Having said that, sometimes my steering feels stiff when its near centre so thinking uj or poss pump.

Strut top bearings are a fairly common issue, possibly leading to snapping a front spring.
Jack both front wheels off the ground and you should be able to hear where the issue is as you, (or better yet an assistant), twiddle the steering wheel.

The fact that you've had the car 5 years and not needed the Forum says it all.

Everyone who traveled in my 406 Exec loved it, said how comfy it was, no-one has ever said that about my hugely more expensive (at the time) Swedish lump.

I do miss the 406 I always remember how nice it was to flop into it after a hard day and it would whisk you home in comfort and without drama

I love driving it every time even after 5 years it still feels a nice place to be. I intend to keep the car and do a rolling resto over time when things need doing as it will be a classic before you know it.

I ran 406 estates for about 10 years and they were the most reliable cars I have ever owned, apart from being comfortable and riding well, best ever headlights too. I think they are probably the best car Peugeot ever made.

That's a new one, barely run in! My 110 HDI is at 400 k miles and still pushing the family in the back of the seats when floored

The 2.2Sri is a rare beast, although the engine is more plentiful on the Coupe version.

I'm a little curious about it I have to admit.
