Hi,
Just joined the group. Had 2 previous 406 saloons in the past. One was new and the second one was a couple of years old (rapier)
But picked up an 03 plate estate 2.0 HDI estate last June as a cheap second car.
It's been great and really comfortable. The space is awesome
Rebuilt the rear brakes, few bits for MOT . Just replaced a broken front N/S spring.
96000 now and I am enjoying it.
The cd player has a mind of its own but I can live with that. Plays when it wants. Any ideas??

Welcome to the club, 406 is the best car I have owned for reliability and economy.
Some of the very knowledgeable people on here will have an idea about your cd

Hi & welcome aboard. 8)

Probably easiest to swap the cd changer - not coded to the car, probably quite a few resting in scrapyards by now.
If you can't track one down let me know, I think my bro has one.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Hi and welcome to the forum.

My opinion of 406's is well known, I think they are the best buy on the secondhand market, especially the diesels, the 2.0. particularly as it has all the advantages of a direct injection with very few of the disadvantages and they seem to last forever and are very reliable. The only thing that lets them down is the handbrake which is poorly designed but I will forgive them that.

Hi Wag, welcome to the club 8)
The 406 is a great car (but I guess you know that already) and is great value in the second hand market - some are really cheap as the list of issues is long but not really anything some time, effort, patience and fresh enthusiasm can deal with.
The CD player can be temperamental when they get to this age, you can fit a replacement from a scrappy but it will need coding if it's the head unit that's playing up, or if it's the changer in the boot then as Doggy says, a replacement won't need coding and I have one here along with 3 magazines...
Maybe try a cd lens cleaner in the meantime, or maybe a BSI reset?
A BSI reset is basically disconnecting the battery ( after unlocking the door, popping the bonnet and leaving the car's BSI to fall asleep - takes 3 minutes) and this should reset it.
The BSI is like a central hub for all the creature comforts and driver aids to communicate with each other, and it can get a bit confused over time.
Keep up the good work, well done for sorting the back brakes though as the calipers are prone to sticking and the handbrake set up is a bit poor unless you keep on top of it.

Thanks guys.
Mine doesn't have the cd changer so I was thinking it must be something in the main unit or linked to the small display on the dash. Thought about sending it to clarion but at present I've linked my mobile through an fm transmitter for long runs.
The radio units for sale on eBay: Would they work as I thought they were car coded?

A replacement will need coding - some sellers can code the stereo for you before posting it off, if you give them the vin number - or a local member or main dealer can code it after its fitted if it's convenient.
Just to add, you could fit a Connects2 or Yatour instead - it's an adapter that the stereo thinks is a CD Changer but plays Mp3 by SD card or usb, and it plugs into the back of your existing but temperamental CD player, you can even use the stalk to change tracks etc and the display shows the track and cd number - some coding may be needed if your stereo isn't set up for a cd changer.

Thanks for the advice.

I tried the reboot bsi but the the cd player is still dodgy. However, the remote central locking has stopped working now. Can still use the key though.
Tried several times to re learn the key but its not having it.

Have you tried starting the car and pressing the bug button once as soon as you start the car then turn off remove key and try it. It worked for mine when I came to it one morning and it had forgotten both keys.

I'll give it a try but the car doesn't need to have the remote working to operate so I'll see how it goes. Don't want to spend £50 at the main dealer getting it fixed if I can help it.
Not as if I've forgotten how to use a key, it's just convenient really. If the car came with it not working I dont suppose I'd have rushed to get it fixed.
I only have 1 other key and that doesn't have the buttons.

I've now had the 406 almost a year. I prefer it from my wife's Focus estate 15 plate, enjoy the cheap running, almost 50 to the gallon on a run to Stockport from the midlands over the peaks, love the smooth quiet
un-hurried cruise wherever I go, with the ability to boot it if necessary. Settle comfortably into to lush seats with arm rest.
It's also swallowed two cycles in the back with luggage on a few days away.
For less than a grand that's a cheap years motoring.
Am I sad or what?
