Ahoy!

Post by Fuzzdog »

Hello, Peugeot-people!

Just joined as I have acquired a 2003 406 HDi saloon, which is mostly wonderful, aside from a complete lack of speedo and assorted warning lights decorating the dash. Well, they weren't there when I bought the car - some bugger had removed the LED bulbs from the instruments.

Not particularly concerned as I got the car for very little and it's otherwise in very good shape, but no doubt I shall be picking various brains on a regular basis to try to work out exactly what the hell is happening.

Hi & welcome!

Well removing the bulbs is a devious trick, I'd be pretty miffed about that. Which ones are on? Are they accompanied by any warning messages on the MFD?

Which engine have you got? And how many miles are on it? And we like pics :cheesy:

So: let the battle of the bulbs commence!

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

I whipped the panel out, and found that the bulbs for 'STOP', the brake warning light, the ABS light and the airbag light were all absent. Might explain why the MFD keeps barking on about defective brakes, defective ABS and faulty airbags then. ;) Replaced them all, and sure enough, they were all on.

I've already replaced the speedo sensor which resulted in absolutely no improvement, so I'm pretty sure some sort of diagnostic session will be required to sort it all out before it drives me too bonkers too quickly, haha. I'm quite used to doing work on cars myself, and I like a bit of a project.

It's a 2.0 110 HDi, 133k miles. I'm near Southampton!

Haven't really taken many pics yet, but here's one I do have -

Looks really tidy and well worth some effort. Unbelievable that someone woud butcher it like that.

There's a few regulars who have the diagnostic kit and are more or less in your part of the world.

Hi there, welcome :cheesy: That is a bit nasty, did you buy it privately or from a dealer?

I suspect rwb meant 90 or 110 bhp. A 90 would be a bit glacial but a 110 should be quite spritely (unless you're used to driving something much more powerful)

Well, my last car was a remapped Saab 9-5 2.3 Aero, so most things feel a little less spritely after that - I'm mostly looking more for less pain in the wallet at fuel time now, there was only so long I could put up with low 20's MPG, no matter how much fun it was.

The 110 can be pepped up significantly for little expense and still return 50+ mpg under most conditions.

Just a thought, (as you're new to the mysteries of 406's), be aware that if you should swap the clocks, you may wind up with your car displaying the sum of the totals already recorded on each set.

Thanks for the warning! May be a little late for that, as I fitted a second hand set of clocks as a test which now show 233k. Hopefully, the BSI will remember the truth and the mileage will return to normal once the original clocks are repaired and back in. If not, oh well.

I've had Citroens before, so I am aware of the wonders of French electrical systems.

Hi, if you need any help with diagnostics, I am in Bournemouth with the tools to do it - the brains part is debatable but I'll give it a go..!!

There are also other members in Andover and Basingstoke which I guess is fairly local, for a diesel anyway.

Looks a nice car too.

Well that looks a bit nice

The mileage is the larger of the two (from experience) and there was a question on here a little while ago about whether it can be changed.

Looks like you're not short of PP2000 offers  Used to be so difficult to find anyone, and now it seems like we're all geared up!

Annoyingly, I had all the Lexia gubbins when I had my Citroens, but got rid of it all when I sold them. D'oh!

One trip to eBay, coming up.
