Quick search for "trip computer" returns this thread:

There's no step-by-step guide because I never got round to doing one, but I did put what wires go where. Note that you're on your own with the all-important ECU wire. Don't connect yours to pin 32 on the ECU unless you've got a Bosch 3.2 ECU, which you probably won't have otherwise you risk bricking the ECU...

Ah now that's because MJB's is a D8 and yours is a D9, completely different animal. I don't think anyone on here has done a retrofit of a trip computer to the D9. which makes you the guinea pig!andrewg1323 wrote:Cool thats the thread i;ve been working from
Just ripped my display out as there was some mention of a switch on the side of the display, unfortunately cant find this so dissasembled the display and now none of the bulbs in the display work! Have i killed something?

As for what you've done to the display, I don't know but I don't like the sound of it

Good luck

Oops! I missed that oneDaiRees wrote:Ah now that's because MJB's is a D8 and yours is a D9

As for the bulbs, try shining a torch at the screen. If you can see what the display's trying to show, it's just the bulbs gone - you can try just replacing them - otherwise something major's happened to it. Could just be you've not put the connector back right tho.

I've been having a surf for it (in between washing my cars and gardening) and the idea seems an obvious progression, it's like a car ECU with 2 busses for equipment with varying priorities (think IRQ), the CAM (for important stuff like engine and ABS) and CAV (for less important stuff like ICE and air con). Apparently it's done to avoid having 13 kilometers of wiring inside every car.
All very nifty and "high tech" but I guess we're another step closer to buying cars with no bonnet release. Or at least just a big cover with just the dipstick and oil filler cap poking through... Hold on, I already have something like that. "No user servicable parts inside".
So, hands up who's never seen a Blue Screen of Death? Whats the automotive equivilent to Ctrl Alt Del? Headlamps horn fag lighter?
At least now I understand what this is about:

Another reason to fix the handbrake...Honest John wrote:Water has been known to get into the ECU creating short circuits and causing things like the car to attempt to self-start while the alarm goes off, the wipers wipe and the screenwashers spray screenwash fluid. This seems to be increasingly common.

Had my aircon panel go on a hot day, D8 so not BSI, I did the old style Ctrl Alt Del -> BRST (Big Red Switch Time - remeber those on computers) Clutch down, switch off and on again, clutch up to restart. All fine after thatsteve_earwig wrote:Whats the automotive equivilent to Ctrl Alt Del?

Has anyone else seen that Navy jobs ad where the guy reboots the computer by flcking the switch. At the end the shot pans out to show the vessel is a submarine!!
