hello newbie here:-)

Post by Melody »

Hi everyone,

I just bought myself a 406 2.0HDI that has had a remap. It's pretty quick and nice and comfy to drive. Not bad for my first Peugeot :-).

I had to replace the wheel bearing almost straight away but that's sorted now and its a great cruiser! I'll get some pics up when I can get one without the snow lol.

Just one issue that has popped up yesterday is the steering keeps going stiff and the wheel is difficult to turn. It seems to be an intermittent fault but is this something that is common on these and is it likely to be the ps pump at fault?

Mel :-)

Hello!

Not sure on the steering, slipping Aux belt maybe?

I'm sure someone can come along with some more tips for you, I just thought maybe it could be the suspension top mounts? they shouldn't really make the steering that stiff but can you hear a 'boing/twanging' noise when you turn the wheel?

No there's no noise when it happens just stiff spots which make it so it won't self centre either you have to force it back. It happens more in left hand corners than right if that makes any difference? I got a quote for a pump and it's not cheap so I hope that isn't it lol

Welcome!

Does it always happen in the same place (i.e. same steering wheel position)? It's certainly not a common fault although it's probably not unheard of, a quick search on here didn't turn much up.

Did you get a quote for a new pump fitted? If so I imagine that's going to be ridiculously expensive. As I said, the PAS pumps aren't a particularly weak spot, so you could get a second hand one and have that fitted - there are a couple I just found on eBay at £43 inc.

Thanks for the tips. It doesn't really seem to happen in the same spot its just generally notchy and difficult to drive when it happens.

Thanks for the warm welcome. Nice idea for a second hand unit :-)

If it's the aux belt slipping you will probably hear it screeching, and the battery light will flicker on the dash.

Where are you based? I'm sure you could find a pump in a local scrappy (probably cheaper than eBay if you can get hold of one), then have a mechanic you know fit it for you.

I can't think of anything else that would cause this apart from the PAS pump. Could perhaps be the rack? I've never heard of people having problems with the racks on their 6s...

Is yours a 90 or a 110bhp?

According to ServiceBox, the 90s all appear to have had part number 4007.9E fitted, whereas the 110s had part 4007.X9 fitted until RPO 8698 after which 4007.9E was fitted.

thanks for the tip it's a 110, I have got one now but I bought one from the exact same model to be sure :) I thing it needs a service too, gonna check the book but it gave me a bit of a rattle this morning setting off so I'll buy everything this weekend and give it a full check over.

Can't remember which model but I have vague memories of a member post about lose mounting bolts on the rack, shouldn't cause stiff spots in the steering but worth a check.

I'd be inclined to get it up on some axle stands and give the steering/suspension a good look over.

I shall have a look this weekend it actually seems to have fixed it's self since I bought the pump but I'll fit it anyway just in case.

I'm just in the process of buying some seats from a mk3 Supra (the car I used to have) as I'm not finding the seats too comfy at the moment they seem lacking in lumbar support :( they should be fun to fit, gonna see if I can wire them up too so the electrics in them still work!

Then the next job is get the interior a wet vac to get rid of the smell of stale fag smoke, give it a good wash and wax. It's a really nice red when it's clean :) then I'll take some pics lol

That's probably the first time I've heard anyone complain about the 406 seats, I wouldn't give up on them too early. Maybe the seat base is worn? too soft? they do not have lumbar support but don't really need it either most people find them pretty good as they are.

The D8 seats have lumbar support, the D9s don't (or at least, this is roughly the case). Both the original cloth seats in my D8 and the replacement leathers have a lumbar adjustment :)

You can just see the adjuster in this pic:

Our D9 has no lumbar on its leather seats :(

you will need to weld the original base to the other seat id guess,
