406 2.0 hdi dies

Post by bushroo »

Hi
Bought my first ever Peugeot last week its a 406 2.0 hdi glx, drives realy nice. Traveled about 20ml and it stopped pulled over and it restarted first turn of the key. It cut out once more on the way home and is now in limp mode, had the codes read p0380 (I think is ok to ignore ) p0190 rail pressure,p0230 pump primary circuit. I was told the fault would flash up on the radio screen so next time it stopped I watched and it read oil pressure insufficient even though the oil warning light did not come on.The question I have is does the low oil pressure warning cause the car to stop or does the engine stopping cause the low pressure warning.
As with every new car I get I have changed all the filters and the oil.
THANKS IN ADVANCE

Hi & welcome, and sorry to hear that your first experience of 406dom has been less than perfect.

According to the list of doom
the codes are:

p0380 : Glow Plug/Heater Circuit "A" Malfunction
p0190 : Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Malfunction
p0230: Fuel Pump Primary Circuit Malfunction

Someone more technical should be along shortly to suggest possible courses of action. My guess is that:
(a) you're right that p0380 and the low engine oil pressure are red herrings,
(b) p0190 could be a consequence of p0230, and
(c) p0230 is probably the low pressure fuel pump in the tank (although there is a veriety of HDi 90---the Siemens type--- that doesn't have this) which is a known common falt.

The error messages on the MFD should be taken with a pinch of salt: they indicate that something might be wrong, but not what. The most common is "engine anti-polution system defective" which corresponds to dozens if not hudreds of fault codes.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

Thanks for the info would have been chasing my tail for days.
it would seem that fuel delivery would be the problem then. When I changed the filter it was realy dirty.
After reading other posts there is a pump like noise from under the back seat for three or four seconds when the ignition is turned on and when I changed the filter there was no swarf in the housing.
Thanks again

Had a mechanic look at the problem came up with h.p pump knackered quoted £800+ to replace. I had read a very informative post in the electrical section about the high pressure regulator, mentioned this to the mechanic he said "still going to be £500 - £700 as the pump will have to come off and the timing belt and pulleys replaced at the same time". If the timing belt needed changing I might have thought about it for a split second but instead I decided to visit the local scrappy 1/2 hour later and £10 lighter I had a replacement.Cleaned it up and fitted it (took about 2hrs) car started first time reved to over 3000revs operated the key three more times engine light went out, now no staling and not being in limp mode it drives beautifully.Just got to stop the leak from the sun roof now I am shure I will find the answer on here somewhere.
