Forgetting my login

Post by Captain Jack »

Does anyone else's web browser forget that it's supposed to be logged on to this site? My Windows laptop, Mac desktop and Android phone all forget that I am logged on to this site after about a day. Is there a 24h cookie expiration set somewhere?

Not that I know of, though I'm never far from here anyway

Do you use any program that bins cookies? Like CCleaner etc. The one I use I have to set an exception or it deletes the cookie and I have to log in again.

It should only do that when you run ccleaner anyway... That's the only time i ever get logged out.

I never run any of those programs. I try to be careful where I trawl and stay away from dodgy sites (unlike you lot, it seems).

Besides, this happens across a number of platforms for me, so I cannot blame it on anything specific, except this site as I don't have this issue anywhere else.

That's not very nice :frown: I think it's a bit naive to assume that all the super-safe pages you visit just leave their own happy, smiley cookies that are only there to make your life easier. I dunno what half of this sh*t is so I clean it off regularly. I also regularly read reports of site that are hijacked into foisting unpleasant surprises onto the computers of people who visit them. Do you use photobucket? I have a gismo that tells me what cookies sites are foisting on me and it runs out of room on the page to display them all. Incidentally, if you don't clear your caches out they will build up massively. Although I suspect the reason you haven't had any problems by not flushing them out occasionally is the same reason you need to keep logging back into the OC - you have a program of some sort doing this for you, you just don't know about it.

Steve, cookies are generally harmless. Yes, they can track stuff but they are essentially harmless. They are mandatory for most sites you visit these days... But I take your point. Stuff that's 'left behind' by various sites would usually come in form of an applet, plug in, Flash or whatever other form of programs can execute on your browsers. Also, it depends on what OS you're running...Windows will be affected far more often by malicious code than Linux, OS X or Android.

I do run AdBlock in Chrome, though, so that keeps a lot crap from being shown in the first place.

Back on topic, I think when you click "remember me" here, there's an expiration time set on the cookie...be it 24hours or whatever. But need nick to really look at it. Unless some other admins can look in the admin panel if there's some validity period set for 'remembered sessions'?
