How many forum users still actually drive a 406

I saw a Silver D9 Estate last week and was genuinely thinking "wow a 406"

There's just not many around now at all (as is reflected in this Forum's activities) mind you you don't see many 407's really either

Hmm, well I've been out in West Wales today, an between Cardigan, NewQuay, and Carmarthen, over a period of three hours this morning, I spotted three 406's . One I've seen before, the other two are not known to me, they aren't the only ones in the area.

Reliable roomy cheap economical cars are valued in the area.

Still use mine everyday, had it about 20 months original 85000 miles 03 model, got damaged early this year because someone reversed into my passenger rear door

and lost car, bought it back from insures got a second hand door, resprayed and back on the road.

I ran them for about 10 years until about a year ago. I got two others for friends on mine and they are still running them. There seem to be quite a few about still in Devon.

Still using mine, daily .my second 406 , 1st one 6 yrs and this one 10 yrs ,it's a Y reg 110 with 180k. Still pulls really well. Going to upgrade shorty but still keep the 406

Both our 406's have gone, Now running a C5 Tourer and a C4 Hatch.
I look after a couple of 406's for friends and would have another if I could find one that's been stored and perfect condition, These modern motors are too complex and full of emission shite

That seems to be the logical progression, we have two C5 tourers, must be the smoothest riding vehicle on the road and ours have steel springs!

I think that's the problem, a lot of 406 Estates end up spending their last 3 or 4 years as Painter & Decorator 'vans' or Window Cleaner etc..

What would most people say would be the final nail in the coffin for a typical daily-use 406?

Mmmm, Cambelt failure, or Aux Belt failure leading to Cambelt failure and Garage saying "you need a new engine" or some similar half-arsed comment.

They can rust, if the clips that hold the rubbers on the sills break off water can get inside the sills, which do have drains but they're usually full of clinker, resulting in water sloshing about inside the sills eventually making its own exit.

Anything that puts them "beyond economical repair", depending on how much the car is worth - a broken timing belt will do it, labour time's a bitch. Or get a "new" engine from the breaker's, remove the old one, put the new one in... On a car that's worth 500 quid? Some parts on these are stupidly expensive, some are no longer made (e.g. sealed hydraulic systems on early ML5 transmissions, try getting by without). Or maybe just a cascade of failures, not much cost to do each but they add up.

I think BSI probs account for a few going to the scrappers, To get a new one one and have it all matched is way more than they are worth.
And not just 406 pugs,
Spent an hour on sunday trying to trace an indicator fault on a Opel Vivaro, turned out that was the BSI,( or BCM as they call it). I can feel a rewire with an old fashioned relay unit
