Auto lights

Do you use the auto lights?

I don't: they come on too early (I hate people having headlights on when sidelights will do), they come on in silly places like in car parks an woods, and when they have come on they don't go off soon enough.

Nah they're great, I actually find mine are a bit too lazy coming on.

bought the car with them turned on and havnt turned them off, mabie im just gettin old and lazy

love them, no having to turn on lights and i think the turning on in car parks is a good idea. They are really convenient, and auto lights/wipers is technology i like to see in a car, i have more use for them than stupid things like electrically folding rear seats which the new ashtray estate has.

I had them on my C5 & thought they were great. Once turned to auto I never had to switch them off or on again.

Lets not forget the joyous noise that switching the auto function on makes, still hasnt got me that pretty air hostess yet, but a nice noise.

I disagree. When there is enough daylight that I do not need headlights for seeing: if you have your sidelights on then I can see your car, but if you have your headlights on then all I can see is glare.

I drive coaches and artics for a living. We have to use mirrors a lot more than you do in a car due to the size of the vehicles. This inevitably makes visibility slightly less clear, particulary in the winter months. You stand a lot higher chance of me and my colleages seeing you if you use your head lights not the parking lights. Various cars I owned or drove in the 80's and 90's had the solution to this, the headlights came on at half power when the parking lights were used with the engine running. A good idea that.
This is also a reason to keep your high level brake light working as the body mounted ones are very low from where I sit. If you are being dazled by head lights, perhaps they are not adjusted correctly?

Aha, I remember the Dim-Dips, they were great my Ford Onion and my 405GR had them.

They were officially referred to as 'Town Beams' and came into force in 1987. It was considered that 'side lights' were insufficiently intense to provide improved conspicuity in conditions requiring it and 'Main Beam' headlights considered too glaring for safe use in built-up areas.

In 1988 in all came to a shitty end when, and I quote....... the European Commission successfully prosecuted the UK government in the European Court of Justice, arguing that the UK requirement for dim-dip was illegal under EC directives prohibiting member states from enacting vehicle lighting requirements not contained in pan-European EC directives. As a result, the UK requirement for dim-dip was quashed. Nevertheless, dim-dip systems remain permitted, and while such systems are not presently as common as they once were, dim-dip functionality was fitted on many new cars well into the 1990s

bloody EU rules, another stupid one along with no oil based paint, now getting hold of old car paint is a real nuisance.

I actually thought they were a good idea, not for the stated reason though, it means people have 4 sidelight bulbs and don't drive around for months doing motorcycle impressions when one bulb goes because they never check their bulbs. They should have done something similar with the brake light bulbss...
