Well reading that article it seems like he just used to draw massively complex and overengineered designs to resolve simple problems. It seems he was an author and cartoonist, and not actually an inventor. I always assumed he made useful machines out of everyday stuff, hence why I thought the peg spring fuel flap fix was a "Heath Robinson" invention, but since he didn't actually make anything and since his inventions were usually next to useless, it wasn't really a good description of Gaz's ingenious workmanship.....

So maybe we should, from this point forth, call any solution to crappy French engineering made using everyday items for little or no money a "GAZ-23" fix.... 8)

Anyone know a GAZ-23 for my fekking com2000???

Well yes, he was an artist, I thought some of his stuff was very interesting to look at because of the really daft ideas he came up with. His name has now become part of the English language:

From Cambridge Dictionaries Online
Heath Robinson
adjective UK HUMOROUS OLD-FASHIONED
describes a machine which is very cleverly made and is complicated in a ridiculous and amusing way, but which is not practical or effective enough for general use:
a Heath Robinson contraption

From the OED
Heath Robinson
• adjective Brit. ingeniously or ridiculously over-complicated in design or construction.
— ORIGIN named after the English cartoonist William Heath Robinson (1872-1944).

Besides, what you've got there is what my dad would call "a bodge" (a temporary/permenant repair, as opposed to "a botch" - any sort of job done badly).

Anyway, clothes peg springs rust.
