Ignition barrel replacement

Alright, so today I decided to replace my ignition barrel with the one bought from fleaBay as mine was sticking quite badly. At first, I thought that all I would have to do is replace the barrel and replace the keyblade in the key. Not so.

First, the wiring was a little different on the replacement barrel, which wasn't really an issue as I could just hardwire it to the car after some multi-metering. Then, I decided to simply replace keep the old "wire block" that is attached to the barrel and replace the barrel mechanism itself.

So, I disassembled it - quite fiddly - and put the new mechanism on the old wiring turning thing and hey presto. Then, I replaced the key blade in the key.

Second, start the car.... chug chug chug "Engine Immobiliser Fault". Hm.... Placed the old key blade to the tranducer receiver coil and vroom vroom vroom - it started! Where on earth is the code stored? I thought it was in the plip thing? Is it in that plastic thing that's on the end of the key blade? Or is it in the key blade itself? Trouble is, I didn't receive a replacement transducer coil thing - but I guess it's not the coil that has the code - it's just a receiver.

Bugger... So, I thought, I'll tackle the original barrel mechanism and see if I can clean it up, grease it up and get it going. I stuffed the internals full of grease, tighten up the silly bracket spring, which seems to hold everything together and reassembled it. It was perfect - like new! No sticking, just smooth turning action and wasn't rattling!

My guess is that it's the bracket spring, which is held in place by two plastic lugs, that weakens with time and detaches the lock barrel with the wiring barrel. This then causes all sort of problems.

Now I have a spare ignition lock for future breakdowns. But where is the code stored?

The transceiver is a little silicon 'brick' glued inside the key

But that was in place and original and it didn't work. Only when I put the original key blade, with a plastic bit attached to the end, to the receiver coil that it fired up.

Didn't you say that you never got the 'ring' receiver bit with the new key? the receiver and transmitter parts will be paired so it won't like your new key but will like the old one.........or am I being silly?

Hi CJ all of what you described happened to me when i did mine , and as my original
barrel was beyond saving i ended up getting a new one from the stealers

Hm, I guess I needed the original coil receiver thing as well then...

Yes it seems so CJ although i wonder if they are coded in to the ECU
or Bsi something that crossed my mind when i was replacing it

The thing that goes around the ignition barrel is just an aerial - the receiver's hidden somewhere behind the dash

Hey, Captain Jack!
May i ask you, how did you managed to disassemble the switch itself? I dont mean the electrical part apart from "key" part, but the key part itself, see the photo what i mean. I cant get it to pieces, but I want to try to repair it before buying another one.
