Uprated intercooler questions...

After noticing a lack of boost just lately, i did some investigations and found that the end of the intercooler is split.
Are there any decent upgrades out there, which will maybe give a performance increase? What intercoolers will fit it? And is a front mount possible or is a lot of work involved?

All comments welcomed, cheers guys.

should be possible as mine will be front mounted with an aftermarket intercooler but mines going in a 306 so im not a 100% on the space available in a 406 bay but id say its possible. for my 306 i just bought a ebay jobby and pipework. to fit it to a 306 it involves removing the cooling fans as the new intercoller is double the thickness of the original. and im replacing the original cooling fans with 2 slimline fans no cutting of bumpers was needed. at a guess for a 406 id say the same applys, if you wanted to use the original intercooler pipework i suggest you either buy two 90 degree bends or a back exit intercooler. as on the original intercooler the inlet and outlet were facing to the engine were as most aftermarket the in let and out let come straight out the sides.

this is simialr to the one i have

and back back exit i mean something like this as thats similar to the original intercooler inlet/outlet direction

Thats awesome, Thanks. If you dont mind me asking, how much was the ebay jobbie? Do you have the url to the shop you bought it from?

What kind of spec are you running for your 306? I was really considering doing the 306 conversion myself, but i need the space of the 406.

think i payed £70 for mine. plenty come up if you put intercooler in the ebay search id grab a link for you but they have banned ebay in work so i cant get on it. cant give you a spec as the engine is still in pieces at the mo as ive been rebuilding it as a project. but i can tell what im planning on doing to it.
- nissan radiator
- new head
- new gaskets, belts and pumps
- front mout intercooler
- oil cooler
- 205 1.9 gti cams
- baily venturi DV
- boost controller (looking to go around 12psi)
- stock t25 turbo turbine side and a fiat or pulsar t28 compressor side 360 degree bearing (hoping that only having it running on 12psi it will keep some reliability.
- remap
- HDI gearbox (dependant how my existing gearbox holds)

im hoping with these i should happily see the 200 mark anything extra would be a bonus.

Thats a nice spec list. Ill do a search on ebay in a bit, see what it throws up.
What does the 306 conversion consist off? Is it generally straight forward?

I remember in the late 90's, i fitted a C20XE into a nova, that was an awesome car, which went like stink (shame about the image the Nova has though, otherwise id probably have kept it).

If all goes well, i may be having a company car in a few months, and a 306 conversion is something i may consider doing. You cant beat a big block in a little car.

its pretty much a straight drop in mounts wise just got to watch for the turbo fouling the bulk head. the biggest head ache is the wiring as u need to splice the 406 to a 306 but im sending that off to a auto electrician.
