406 hdi diesel problem

hi, I recently done a small service on a family friends 406 HDi diesel & soon as i done the service a amber light came on with im 99% sure is the engine management light the can drives fine until you get to say 4th or 5th gear then the car starts to lose power until you change down then its fine
i changed the oil, oil filter,air filter & fuel filter

but one thing i done has been on my mind ever since i seen the problem, when i changed the fuel filter i done it the following way

removed both fuel pipes
drained the diesel via the small drain plug
removed the filter case cap
removed the filter - refited the new filter with new rubber ring which was supplyed also put the metal ring in place
refitted filter case cap
refitted both fuel pipes
turned the ignition for a few seconds then started the car it ran fine but the light came on a few seconds later

i got a feeling ive made a mistake there & should have done some thing else or am i being paranoid

anyhelp would be greatly appreciated

i recently did my fuel filter exactly as per your sequence and all ok. Your problem must be elsewhere.

i had a look at the car again today & for some reason the filter wasnt on correctly it was covering the hole slightly at the bottom but is now in the right place & car is all working as it should.
