As per the title,

Really trying to figure out whether im getting correct mpg, have been inputting my fill up data onto a excel spreadsheet so can look whats going on.

I have a tiny concern and thats that when i cleaned the egr valve and connected the metal flexi hose back up to it initially it looked as if it was leaking but then gases went away and i put it down to all the cleaning agents etc i used burning off the outside of the valve etc. the thought that it is leaking is still lingering in the back of my mind though and i cant make up my mind if i can smell gases or not when its running with my nose to the egr valve!!? still havnt got rounf to checking if handbrake is dragging yet.

Car is 2002 110 hdi saloon with 44,000 on clock.

That sort of mpg sound right?

Of course,these speeds are on a private road ,but on my trips to my mums in London/Surrey,124 miles,M4,M25,A3,if i can i set my cruise control to 89 mph .My computer tells me i average 46 mpg.Thats a 2003 HDI 110(remapped to 140)estate,with 115k miles on it.
On most motorway journeys i do 90 mph ish,& i average 45 mpg.

How on Earth do you manage 89mph on the M4, M25 and the A3? They are car parks....

I used to get around 47mpg but lately, I am struggling to get 44mpg.. I guess it's down to cold weather etc...

39/40 mpg is about what I'd get. A 110 should be a bit better, paticularly at moderate speed, but I guess it's starting to work hard at these speeds. As CJ says, everyone's mpg suffers a bit in cold weather. Sounds OK to me.

Yours are pretty impressive MPG figures from your 406 HDis, almost 40MPG sitting at 85-90 is excellent i would say.

Im struggling to acheive 40MPG on the 2.0HDI 110 C5s read out, though i do find that the trip computer underreads by as many as 5MPG. So dont believe your cars computers!
I always get around 50 MPG from my 206 2.0HDI 90, thats a mix of town driving, fast motorweay driving and stuck in the city centre traffic on my daily commute.

MMM, what if the auxilary belts are too tight? They feel quite tight to me and from hunting around online some people say it can contribute to mpg loss?!?!

I know the tracking is out on it too at the moment, some people say can make a difference, some people think its an old wifes tale, what you lot think?

Tyres inflated to 32psi alround, think thats right, haven't got the manual!

According to the information on the driver-side door post, your tyres should be 195/65/R15 91H, and they should be inflated to 34 PSI all round.

The label on the door post is awash with useful information, particularly useful if you can't find your handbook!

Greetings fellow HDI 110 driver. The auxilary belt tightnes is controlled by a spring loaded tensioner and must be very tight. The tracking will make a big differnce to the mpg. The wheels need to be pointing in the same direction to lesson rolling resistance. Tyre pressures are also important, but I can not remember mine as they are on a sticker on the drivers door pillar. Also, try to avoid heavy breaking as that will also waste fuel.

I average about 55 mpg with my estate doing 70ish on the motorway.

Àt a steady 75mph as recorded on the speedo (shows 71mph on sat nav) over a distance of 154 miles with no stops or delays other than 6 miles of roadworks 50mph restrictions i recorded 57.4 mpg in my 90 est 2000 model 132k on the clock,
the MFD showed an average speed of 69 mph over the journey, and the weather was around 12c and slightly wet.

this might seem a bit pedestrian to some of you guys posting about speeds that are near enough to 30% over and above the speed limit, but i have just parked up my other car which was capable of almost 3 times the speed limit on the motorway
(of course only to be done on a private road, my private road is the M62 ) and in all honesty yes i was guilty of speeding on the motorway on a regular basis in my previous motor, changing over to the pug has taught me the biggest killer of mpg is speed,I sound like a right old man now

I get around the same mpg as you seismic. You will/should get much better mpg if you as said above and keep it around 70. No smells from the EGR that I can detect
I have gone through most things I can think of but none has made a real difference to my mpg. I have just done the forte in the fuel filter + a bottle in the tank to see if it helps. It feeels very good at mo but it always does with some forte in the tank
The only other thing in my case it could be is perhaps the timing belt off a tooth (retarded) but I did check it a month or so after changing the belt myself and didnt spot anything out.

I reckon nearly 40mpg at those speeds is correct. Look at it another way, knock the cruising speed down to 70 -75 and you should see a sizeable increase in mpg, with little effect on journey times.

Plus its quieter and easier at those speeds.

On a euro trip last year i averaged 59.5mpg from my 110 hdi, cruising in convoy with folks who were towing (i wasnt) at about 70mph, and it did nearly 1000 miles on a full tank, and that was 4 up, full of luggage.

Im starting to think 406s must be way more economical than C5s

On my trip to the south of france this year in the 110 C5 HDi i got 45MPG over the whole trip, which is just a tiny bit more than its doing on average now. That was sat at 80mph (80 on sat nav) with the cruise set pretty much all of the way from here to there at 80, with horendous traffic around paris (dont ever go that way!) and touring around for 2 weeks. I was quite impressed with its economy, given that the ac was never off either. Though you 406 drivers seem to get a bit more?

Tracking will make a big difference as it make a lot more drag, if your wheels are working against each other in different directions that will cause a lot of extra drag.

My HDi 110 has the EGR valve disconnected. Well i say disconnected, the little vacume pipe has been pulled off and a bung inserted into the pipe. This was done when i bought it, however another c5 HDi 110 we had for a short time was much slower and worse on fuel, so i did the same with that one and it made a big difference, the car pulled much better under 2000rpm and fuel economy improved.

Might be something worth trying?

Ive heard this can have a negative effect on the car, on some cars yes maybe, but mine has been off for around 40K miles with no problems at all. Only negative i can think of is it might take a bit longer to warm up, though its much faster to warm than a TDI anyway.

Okay, thanks for all the replies, their just what i needed.

I think i can conclude that the mpg is fairly correct for the speed that i was doing and sorting the tracking out and making sure the tyre pressures are at 2.5 bar like it says on the A-pillar (i never saw the sticker as i have never had a car where the sticker wasnt on the b-pillar and where the sticker was so small!).

I guess being slighly skint like i am, i should be driving slower to save on the MPG, i do try, but im a petrol head at heart and although im learing to really like the 406, driving a diesel is one thing, driving slow is just sometimes too much to be coping with too! (p.s i do speed with safety and other road users in mind too!)
