steering universal joint

my 406 hdi 2002 model has failed mot with play in universal joint between steering column and rack.are they hard to replace and are they dealer part only?cheers

I doubt you'll find a UJ anywhere other than a dealers. Changing it is probably "just" going to involve dropping the subframe

cheers i phoned the dealers or should i say stealers £104+vat shocking

considering it has 1 knuckle joint,would it not be any easier dropping column inside car and taking throught the inside?i'm not sure how its done just better getting an idea before tackling it.

mark the position of the knuckle before you remove it or the steering wheel might be off centre also check for a space in the knuckles not 100% if there is one on the 406 steering knuckle but I have seen people make the mistake and try and fit them in the wrong place on the rack costing them more in the end hope this helps

About 6 years ago i owned a 406 diesel that failed on excessive play in the steering uj, all i had to do was tighten the bolts on both sides of it, it was just loose !, so you might want to give the bolts a tighten and recheck it before you shell out for a new one

cheers for the tips will get a look at it today if this rain goes off.thinking it might be needing replaced tho it was a taxi before i bought it.lots of miles (265,000)same engine and gearbox so they cant be that bad a car if looked after.
