Having had a look through the various posts regarding oil i cannot find anything that covers exactly what i was looking for.
What i am looking for are your thoughts on running the old 20/50 oil in the engine as opposed to the 15/40 i am using at the moment.She has covered 206,000 up to now and i would like to go thicker but am worried that it might put extra strain on the engine/turbo etc and cause damage.
Anyone have any thoughts on this ?

In my experience 20W/50 is far too thick for any engine produced post 1980's and a nice all-rounder I find is the 10W/40 semi-synthetic.

You'll find that even with your highish miles there will be no wear to the cyliners or crank whatsoever so a thick syrup of an oil will cause nothing but grief (that's even if you can get the thing to turn-over on the stuff).

A good 10/40 semi oil does the job. :D

i think that useing semi on a engine that has done that sort of miles is a waste
normal oil and regular changes is the way to go

Putting heavier oil in an old engine was the thing to do once, hell I've even done it myself, but that was the days of cars like Frod Craptinas that made it to 100,000 miles on luck and were then generally ready for the crusher. These lumps are a bit better than that, thankfully (shame about all the bleedin' 'tronics :roll: ), so unless you know you have oil pressure issues I'd leave it be. Worst case scenario: you end up starving your engine of oil because most of it was being dumped back in the sump by the pressure relief valve.

I ran my previous Xantia 1.9TD on 10/40 semi syn right up till i sold it at 180k miles.

i dont dispute that semi syn is good if used from new but im not sure that there would be any advantage in useing it in a old engine

Personally I wouldn't worry, regular oil changes are far more important.

As Steve said, regular oil changes are more important, but I would be thinking that 20/50 is a bit too thick for a turbo charged engine.

You need good, early oil flow to the turbo to keep it well lubricated and cooled.

Personally, I use 10/40 semi synthetic oil for the vast majority of cars, petrol or diesel, but 15/40 semi synthetic or mineral would be fine in a high mileage engine.

Don't forget, 20 quid for oil and 6 quid for an oil filter is much cheaper than a new engine.

I have to buy all sorts of oil for all sorts of engines, eg, Ford and Vauxhall are mainly 5/30, the latest diesel engines take a "low ash" or a PDF oil taking account of the particulate filters....I did a Nissan Primastar today that I had to use this oil in, it's 5/30 fully synthetic PDF, 30 quid for 5 litres.

It can be a bit of a pain these days having to check which is the correct oil for any particular engine.I would hate to fit the wrong type and have a customer jump on me for a wrecked engine!

If you are worried about what oil to use, get your local factor to check their book and get a recommendation from there.

Why would anyone call semi synthetic a waste of money? :? it's hardly expensive especially if you get a 'Comma' brand or something but the main advantage is that it won't shear down like basic mineral oil and it won't burn off so fast.

I think you'd struggle to even find a basic mineral now it's so old hat :|

There's 2 main types: Semi Syn and Fully Syn with all the various grades and additives in between.

You can buy mineral at Halfrauds, but it does usually state that it's for old motors i.e. when mineral oil was in more common use.

Just two add my two eurocents, I put 15-40 semi in the wife's 180K TD Omega and the engine ain't fallen out yet. That car needs about million litres to fill the sump, so us 406ers get of light ^_^

Right, so Halfrauds don't carry a 15W/40 Semisynth for diesels. Does make me wonder where I got the oil for the wife's motor, or if perhaps I put petrol oil in there by mistake :supafrisk:

Anyway point is, is it worth digging around trying to find a suitable 15/40 or shall I just grab the 10/40, jam it in the car and claim my freebie screwdriver set? 170K miles now, BTW.

i have the same car, 1998 1,9td

i use and always have 10w 40 Total Quartz 7000 semi-synthetic

its recommended by peugeot themselfs

its the only oil that stays clean in the engine, it never goes dark black, last year i used castrol gtx diesel and after 2 days the oil was jet black

no idea why or if it is good/bad but to me i would sooner have the nice clean stuff in my engine :roll:

Well, the thing that strikes me there is that if the oil is staying clean, what's happening to all the crap? It's one of the oil's jobs to scrub the muck from your engine, then you drain the whole lot out once a year. Perhaps I'm over thinking this too much...

Anyway, I ended up going here and buying this - got me five litres plus a one litre top up for twenty squids including the postage. Means I can't do the job this weekend but never mind, I'll just lounge about drinking b33r instead :)

perhaps there is no crap in the engine 8)

i do service it every 6 months, maybe thats keeping it nice and clean
