D8 mileometer and clock illumination?

Morning all, anyone help with this one?
The illumination for my 1998 Exec dashboard clock, and mileometer/odometer went recently at the same time, although both displays are working if you peer at them very closely. I tried replacing the clock with another, same problem; and also replacing the clock bulb but it makes no difference. The clock works but it doesn't illuminate. Before it conked out completely it did work a couple of times if you banged the dash above it (the clock).
I did actually have a hand control fitted just before they both went out, but I can't see what could have happened here or if it's related.
Ta!

are all the clock lights dim or just the two?

Just the digital clock on top of the dash, and the dual mileometer/trip meter under the speedo. The actual dimmable dashboard display (rev counter/speedo etc) lights are fine.

Ahh, percussive maintenance, I love it. That'll be a dodgy connection then.

Hi all
Can't help on this but have a problem on my 1997 406 estate petrol 2L. The speedo and rev counter are both on the blink except when they decide to work. I also have problems with only some of the lights working the rev counter and speedo but these never work. If I whack the top of the dashboard, i can sometimes get the speedo to work!!!
Any ideas?
Just joined so newbie so please go easy!!!
Thanks
Alan

I think there is a common issue with bad solder / dry joints on the rear of the clock panel. Ill be removing mine soon too - similar issues and speedo works whenever it wants.

Certainly the operation of dash gauges can be affected by dodgy French soldering. Whacking the dash is a temporary fix, more long term you need to pull the bastard out, split the cluster right down to expose the PCB and re-solder every single joint without soldering in any shorts
I've not heard of this fault affecting the dash/clock illumination before. When I've had lights out, it's always been the bulb - thus far. My clock light is out at the moment, so if/when I get off my arse and fix it I'll let you know what'd happened
