Hi All.

I am the prowed owner of a 406 hence my registering here.

Had it a week and the problems have started. Any help much appreciated.

Symptoms
When the engine is cold (needs to have been sat all night, not just a few hours) it is very bad to start if not at all. Engine turns fine, fires for a splt second then goes.

If your lucky and it fires and stays alive the mixture is very ritch. Won't idle. Stops regularly and process starts again. Can be driving along and engine will just stop. Seconds later you can turn it over again.

When warm, and this takes a while, it is fine.

Have tried the following;
new cat
new fuel filter
new sparks
checked air filter

had mechanic look at it, he could not get his diagnostics software to work, he advised;
change fuel pump relay. However I can't find it and looking through this site i don't seem to be the only one. there are 3 relays under dash by drivers knee, i pulled these out one at a time and car still runs so i guess not these. (does a warmed up relay become more relyable?)

he aslo suggested to replace the entire throttle body for a 2nd hand one.....

this is realy a pain. seems a little thirsy too although this might just be when it's not warmed up.

I've got a garage lined up for a weeks time but could really do with having it sorted before then and need to save pennys too.

Any help is very much appreciated.

aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh, I think my car has no TDC. Well I bet it has, I just can't find it.

It's 2L 16V Petrol R plate.......

I've been working through the post below;
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3489

and there is a part where the area of the TDC is located. Having gone out, got all the bits inc a multi metre I thought I was ready to go.....That was until I could not find the blinking thing.

I think I have uploaded an image below.

sorry to sound ungrateful, I appreciate someone has taken a lot f time to create this guide it's just it seenms to be one thing after another with this as yet unused car.

Fixed it!

Well, I did't fix it. The clever bloke at a garage did. Took em a while though.

They ran lots of tests which came back with 9 faults! Thankfully they re tested with "the proper test software" and it came back as a faulty MAP SENSOR. I believe this controls or at least monitors fuel mixtures etc. This was the causing the the computer to read many other faults.......

So, all good.....for now. Let's see how we get on in the morning though.

runs like a dream now.

quick 106 question......its a mono point injection n reg petrol. very basic compared to the 406........

runs fine no real issues. if you put your foot down when engine is cold it stutters. almost like its getting momentary flooded. i am sure it needs the carb or something cleaned. runs great though and only takes a few mins to warm up, i guess i could not go fast for the first mile for the rest of my days......oh well.

thought i'd ask, save me joining the 106 owners club :)

cheers
