There's plenty of info around on adjusting the turbo, injection pump etc. to get more oomph have a search on
here as they go in for this more than us sober, respectable 406 types.
As your bus is a bit bigger & heavier than a 306, you probably want to loose the cat and perhaps not increase the boost & fuel as much as they recommend. Std 406 exhausts came with & without cats and AFAIK they're interchangeable.

Bear in mind that 406 owners who have tried this report the fuel pump adjustment screw to be sealed off. Apparently you'll need to drill the seal out to access the screw.
Additionally, you'll be needing a boost gauge to adjust your turbo with any degree of accuracy/not risking blowing it up
If you want simpler than that, remove all unnecessary weight from the car (tool box, wife etc) and give it a damn good service. Blast the fuel system through with cleaner. Mind you this is more likely to improve your MPG than HP

I've done this on my 405td (Lucas) with good results, much more low down power and fun to drive.

What did you do, Mark? Turbo and fuel pump, or fiddle with the max speed setting too?
What's it done to your MPG?

Was thinking of doing the same to my own, found a great 'how to' video on youtube. Its for a 306, but it explains how to screw both types of pumps and how to adjust the turbos. Looks simple enough job on the 1.9td.
theres two parts to it....

oh and looking @ the top of my pump there was a brass cap covering the top screw but i just used a screwdriver to work it out of the hole.
Best of luck!

Is there anything like this, but for the 2.1TD engine?

I think the 2.1's ecu controlled so you can't do DIY tweaks in the same way, but some form of remap has been mentioned.
I just can't remember where

Just the turbo and fuel pump, I took the turbo up to 1.1bar from 0.9 it now PULLS harder and harder up to 5,000rpm
I used an adjustable turbo boost valve from ebay (under £15) as its easier to play with to get it right without cralling around under the car but it was a sod to fit, I borrowed a boost gauge and riged it up tempereraly inside the car so I could make the adjustments slowing untill it was right.
For the max fuel screw you need to adjust it a little bit at a time untill it starts to smoke off boost then back it off a tad untill the smoke stops, spend some time doing this to get it right.
I have'nt worked out mpg but it does seem to be a bit bettor.

If you do find a way without a remap please let me know.

Find yourself a diesel specialist and they should be more than happy to remap your ECU in exchange for most of your bank balance. Some won't do the 2.1, only the HDi, but I have seen if offered for the 2.1
