Engine Check Light

Hi all,
recently my 406 (1996 D8, 1.8l, 8 valve) developed an issue. This happens when the engine runs cold. When I pull over after initial start, engine jerks and slows down drastically and at the same time engine check light comes. in couple of seconds it goes off and vehicle pulls like normal. This happens 4 to 5 times after every cold start. What could be the problem ? any advice is highly appreciate.
