First time of posting here so hope you can help out !

My V reg (facelift) 2litre petrol/lpg converted automatic (thats a mouthful!) has for some time shown a fault "auto gearbox fault" on the LCD display with the sport or ice buttons flashing on the speedo so today we drained the old tranmission fluid which was almost dark grey in colour and replaced with new dexton 2 fluid.

The gearbox is the AL4 type and the error code still shows, although the car itself drives faultlessly (as it did before we changed the gear oil, if it wasnt for the error code i wouldnt know a fault existed.

The cars done 142,000 miles although had the head done in November due to cambelt snapping, does anyone have any ideas on the cause of the error code or anything else i can check up on.

i am afraid there not many auto drivers round here, so not many people to help.

i think the oil being grey will be the friction material from the gearbox, likely to indicate its warn. which isn't surprising at that mileage.

i think you'll need to get the fault code read to see what it thinks is wrong. Not sure if this can be done in the same way as the engine codes or not thou, sorry.

One thing that's worth mentioning is that the fault codes sometimes take several "driving cycles" after the repair has been made before they'll self clear. Other than that I'd guess it's a dodgy sensor if everything else seems OK

I think we can say there's NO auto's on here?

If you've changed the fluid and the car drives as it should then leave it?

Other than that go to a dealer for a "Global Test" cost = £70.00 ish the only draw back here is that they are likely to tell you you need a new gearbox I seem to remember there being problems with shift solenoids? - something which can be replaced but dealers prefer to go for the "full monty" maybe get their diagnosis and then go to a Auto Box specialist for the repairs?

Wouldn't a decent auto box specialist be able to read codes and diagnose themselves?
