Much Pleasedness - warped disks

Swapped off the warped (TBH I'm not sure how warped they actually were) front disks for new Brembos the other day. FWIW I managed to get my hands on a set for £34 +VAT by ringing around the local motor factors. I was quoting GSF's website price of £25, not realising that GSF are the only people in the world to sell disks singly :lol:

From what I can remember, you need a T55 bit for the caliper carriers and 13mm and 17mm spanners for the caliper slider bolts. And a rattle gun is nice and handy when you're taking it apart for the third time :roll: A 3 foot breaker bar is nice if you're taking it off for the first time. OTOH I can recommend sealey 3/8th socket sets as they stand up well to being abused by the attachment of 2 foot of jack handle.

The driver's front disc was catching on every rotation. Took it off and cleaned the hub what I thought was stupidly thoroughly with a wire brush. Reassembled it all and checked how it span, and it was still catching. Took it all to bits again, and had a brainwave. Only one side of the car was off the ground, so I started it up and stuck it in second. Hey presto, all I had to do was hold a bit of wet and dry to the hub. Pretty quickly I'd got most of the hub back to good clean metal, so I turned it off and did the last couple of bits. Reassembled the lot again and it's running perfect now, absolutely no binding anywhere.

I also found out that all the tyres were 3 PSI down, so I topped them up. End result is that MPG for cruising up and down the motorway has jumped from 42mpg to 47!

The only danger is putting enough drag on the hub to make the diff drive the other wheel, which isn't very likely (just don't try this at home if the brake disk and pads are on and you want to try them out or you've got an lsd :roll: )

Made me cringe reading that.
I lost the top of my thumb doing something similarly stupid;
Cleaning motorbike chain. Brainwave: Put bike on centre stand and run engine with bike in gear. Hold rag against chain to clean! Oh sh*t, rag got caught in chain and took my thumb through the rear sprocket :shock: :shock: :shock: :cry:

That's why they make little brushes for cleaning chains Teamy :wink: :P

I regularly run the zook in the garage up on axle stands (sometimes all 4 corners) in an attempt to diagnose transmission noises. Got a variety of rumbles and squeels and couldn't work out if it's one of the diffs, the transfer or main gearbox, maybe a UJ or a bearing somewhere, but I've concluded it's all of the above, everything's making some noise :lol:
