Hi guys,
Does my 110 HDi engine have glowplugs or not?
There is no light in the dash, and I just turn the key as you would a petrol, and away it goes every time.
Im having an argument with a guy just now about this. Can someone settle it please???

I shall be interested in the answer to this, i do have a glow plug light on the dash
but it comes on and goes off so fast if you weren't staring at where it is you
would miss it. And i was under the impression direct injection doesn't need them
and when i looked i couldn't find any

Apparantly they do exist, they're only on for a fraction of a second (or not at all if it's warm) when it's above zero. There's a light too, don't blink or you'll miss it.

The glow plugs do exist but because the High Pressure (hot) injection sprays such a very fine mist then combustion takes place very easily and not much pre-heating is needed.

The ECU controls the plugs like this:

Engine coolant temperature/Pre-heating duration

• - 30 °C 16 seconds
  - 10 °C 5 seconds
  0 °C 0,5 seconds
  10 °C 0,25 seconds
  18 °C 0 seconds
  40 °C 0 seconds

During the starting phase, the plugs are supplied in the following cases :
Engine coolant temperature lower than 20°C.
Engine running at more than 70 rpm for 0,2 seconds.

Post-heating allows the operation of the heater plugs to be prolonged following the starting phase.

Postheating is used to reduce pollutant emissions during the first few minutes after starting.

Engine coolant temperature Post-heating duration

• - 30 °C 3 minutes
  - 10 °C 3 minutes
  0 °C 1 minute
  10 °C 1 minute
  18 °C 30 seconds
  40 °C 0 seconds

Parameters which can interrupt the postheating :
Engine coolant temperature lower than 20°C.
Injected fuel flow exceeding 35 mm3.
Engine speed greater than 2000 rpm.

Ive not had any problems with the 406 since I bought her, and I dont have web access at home. All this helped me to stay away.

She is off the road at the moment, getting work done for her MOT. Not much needed, but a lack of funding helped the decision.
Be wary of them throwing brake pads. I had one get thrown out of the gap between the disk and the caliper, and the next I knew was the pedal going to the floor, just as I was approaching an 80mph bend at 120. AAARGH!!
I made it ok, but my pants didnt. RIP brown pants!!!

My front pads are near the rivets and I was going to wait and wait and get new discs etc. don't like the sound of spitting the pads out though

Aah, that would be the mint black 2002 Executive 110Hdi with all the added extra toys, that I bought 2 years ago for the huge sum of £1700. The guy was asking 2 grand, but this typical Scot thought that he was asking way too much. I'll have that arm as well thank you kindly sir.

What would be a good price for her now? She has 88,000 showing on the clock.

Im still going to keep mine for years yet. Its a bloody good car. Should get what I paid for her in twa years then.

Im driving the missus old N reg cavalier 1.7TD (Izuzu engine) at the moment. Its a great old tank, but lacks the refinements of my lovely Pug.
I also hate having to do everything manually.
And dont get me started on the bloody glowplugs on it! 4 heatings to get a good start out of her, and the plugs are NEW!

welton you failed to mention one other thing, post heating is also interuppted if the throttle position is held at more then 70% for 13 seconds, also during postheating 2 stage injection takes place afterwhich 3 stage injection occurs unless engine speed is above 3400rpm, and also the glowplugs are never supplied unless coolant temp and ambient temp is below zero centigrade, the reason the light appears is to test the bulb, as belive it or not the engine management can log a fault code in the pre heater circuit if the bulb fails
