Stop Engine Warning Light Comes On from Cold Start

Hello,

When I start my car from cold Immediately the Stop Engine Warning Light Comes on with "Engine Temperature Too High".

The car is a 2003 2.0 Hdi 90hp

It started off as an intermittent problem now it does it all the time. It used to start and after a few minutes the warning lights came on, now it is doing it immediately after starting and the fan comes on.

I have let the car warm up on idle & after about 20 mins the warning lights stop appearing.

The car has been standing for a while now what with lockdown etc. Does it just need a good run, or should I change the Coolant Temperature Sensor?

Thanks for any advice.

I would change the sensor.
Had a slightly similar issue with my last 2.2 HDi - didn't get the STOP light but the temperature gauge sometimes stayed on cold despite the heater working and oil temperature rising as normal.
Changing the sensor cured it, but clearing the airlocks was a prize PITA

Definitely change the sensor, they are not too expensive really....

My previous 406 would show a hot engine on the gauge despite being first thing in the morning and I hadn't started the engine yet

An easy job but you will lose a bit of coolant - depending on how quick fingered you are.

Ok thanks for your advice. I hear that Bosch or Denso sensors are the ones to go for,

Cheers.
