Thanks all,
points noted re vacuum thingy. I will flag it up with the garage and ask them to check. the Haynes manual does explain how to test to see if the actual servo is at fault ...valves and vacuum pump etc and I bought the manual to give to the garage to help them. (and for me to read!)
I sort of assumed when the 'Peugeot specialist' garage said I definitely needed a new servo they would have done that. ( Oh dear..I should never assume...)
This is what Haynes manual says about Servo replacement.
Note: access to the servo unit and crossover linkage is exceptionally poor (especially on diesel models) but can be improved by removing the cylinder head (where possible) or the engine!
 Crikey!
I Say, dear GingerMagic, any chance your garage man who made his own tool to help with removal would hire it out for a couple of days? I would give him a deposit and return it. Having to remove a cylinder head or engine sound prohibitively expensive. Never hurts to ask
The Master Cylinder is due to arrive very soon, still chasing the Servo...

Things have progressed a bit.
I think I was scammed over the first servo and thank goodness PayPal are refunding me. They are not cheap, IF you can find one.
so...I've had to buy a secondhand one which should arrive this week.
My usual garage was, how can I say....less than enthusiastic about the job and suggested they just change the master cylinder and 'see how it goes'
I am sooo sick of hearing that!
I phoned the 'Peugeot specialist garage' to check and he was adamant that the Servo must be changed.
Bless him, he gave me what I think is a fair price, £250, to change both, given it's a pig of a job, and even better he offered to collect and deliver back as he knows I won't drive it with dodgy brakes.
So when the servo arrives this week, I will get it collected and sell a kidney....
They have done them before, so they should know how to tackle the job and he knows what he's taking on.
Thanks to all, as usual

Here we go again.... Paypal are refunding the first Servo from the scammer.
Now the chap has phoned to say he's sending back the money for the second hand servo I bought because when they took it off it was no good :(
so....I'm still looking for a brake servo.. Peugeot part number 4535 f5
We will get there in the end!
