Timing belt replacement

What is the normal/recommended mileage for timing belt replacement? I know about 60,000 km (~40,000 miles) but Peugeot service is advertizing their timing belt set to stand nearly twice (100,000km). Is their belt special? My current timing belt is Contitech at 60,000 km and not sure what to do. Can it last out 70,000 km without risk?

Peugeot in the uk claimed 80 thousand miles or ten years whichever was sooner
This was revised to 70 thousand or eight years.
But to be honest I do mine at five to six max irrelevant of the millage.

If your car is low millage because it spends time sitting not being used, the belt is wrapped tightly round the lower
crankshaft pulley (this strains the cords in the belt)
Also start / stop driving puts extra strain on the belt.

To be fair, if it's causing you concern - just get it done.

There is every chance the belt would last, but as DDD says prolonged times between starts, and stop start town driving will shorten the life of the belt.

I can't remember what the garage costs would be, maybe around the £400 which is a lot of money for an old Peugeot - but it's cheaper than a replacement car or fixing the engine if the belt goes....

It'll be peace of mind for a good few years, and the 406s seem to be holding their value nowadays.

The belt is 3.5 years old (Contitech kit). If I replace the belt I plan to keep current water pump. It was replaced last time. On the other hand there is low scraping noise from time to time while driving. Is it possible to come from water pump? The other suspected reason for the noise is the power steering pump. But I think it will make uninterrupted noise.

Which is 36000 miles so you'll be fine :) That's good average millage.

I'd never do just a belt, if your paying for labour it's false economy & if doing it yourself a kit including the waterpump
is under £75 over here (I've just done the wifes 206 & the complete kit Q&H was £57 delivered)

I personally do it myself, It's not hard on a 2.0 hdi just follow the guide on here (no special tools needed)
Costs about £120 all in in parts.
Your noise is most likely a bearing going.
For peace of mind I always replace every thing connected with it & the aux drive belt & all the tensioners, idlers ect.

+1 it's not too bad a job and I always replace the complete kit.

It's safe to run the HDi with the auxiliary drive belt removed since the water pump is drive by the cambelt - this should help you find the source of the noise. The dual mass crank pulley gets noisy before it fails, (but usually much worse than you describe), tell-tale signs are rust or metal flakes in the area around the pulley. Alternator pulleys sometimes make a racket too.

Is the water pump is driven by the timing belt on 2.2 HDI? I think it is.

The intervals I follow is every five to six years and I always buy a complete kit.
I have been recommended to use OEM water pump since there have been some issues with none OEM's. Peugeot is using timing belts from Dayco. Ina has also been used according to my local Peugeot dealer.

I think about bearing of A/C compressor. Is it failing "on time" like alternator, starter, etc? I refurbished both starter and alternator and probably now is time for compressor. Is it possible to have increased fuel consumption because of this bearing?

PS: Last week I replaced the timing belt, water pump and power steering pump.

Is it possible wrong condition of Deflection / Guide Pulley or Belt Tensioner of v-ribbed belt to increase fuel consumption? Or can they cut this belt?
