Sorry it's not 406 related but we allow Volvos here, so why not Suzuki

Anyway, my wife's Swift (2009, 1.5L petrol) has some odd issues with idling and cutting out. It seems to idle at 400-500 rpm and feels very lumpy. Often when changing gear, or doing anything that would allow an engine to get to idle, the engine simply cuts out. It can be restarted straight away without issues.

Strangely, it started doing it badly after a battery change but putting the old battery in did not help.

Er.. I know almost nothing about these engines and petrols in general but happy to poke around. There's a lot more space in the engine bay than in my 407! Could I have knocked something on battery change or just a weird coincidence? Could it be an idle control valve sticking - if it has those...?

Have been reading that battery replacement can indeed cause these issues and it has to "relearn"?

If I disconnect the battery in the yoyo it does something similar, although it doesn't cut out it idles at around 600. It takes a while to re-adapt, or a thrash down the motorway.

I think it actually means the throttle body needs cleaning. Oh dear.

Clean of throttle body by the sounds of it, it gets used to the throttle position and adapts to it....until the battery change when it goes "oh sh*t"...

Thanks chaps. Did another "reset" today and sent the wife off for a drive - we'll see if she comes back in one piece.

I had a look around and the throttle body can be removed relatively easily. Annoyingly I would need to drain the coolant if I was to replace it. It looked clean*... Couldn't find the idle control valve though.

Youtube is your friend I'd guess. Hopefully if it settles down itself leave it well alone.....fiddling with stuff always leads to trouble [/T-shirt]

Similarly I was thinking about cleaning the yoyo's, until I saw a warning on a ewetoob vid that said you could scrap it if you do it wrong or use the wrong cleaner, so I decided to leave well enough alone. If it aint actually broke...

Won't the throttle body be motorised? I doubt it has one of those pesky Bowden cables with the driver's foot at the other end of it

Yeah, fly by wire this one, so a motorised throttle body here.

SWMBO is back. Seems to be better - occasionally drops to below 600rpm causing a judder but no stalls.

Hopefully it will get better as time goes on.
