406 exec Estate gearbox

Post by cliffk »

Hi I have a 2003 2.0 hdi Estate and have just bought a 2001 2.0 hdi exec Estate
Reverse on my 2003 is over to the left and on the 2001 it's over to the right and down is this normal?

Yep, I have two '51 reg almost identical estates, on has reverse on the left the other on the right, most confusing when I change cars. I thought the l/h reverse was the later box but apparently not as my wife has an 03, 206 and that has the r/h side reverse.

Early is ML5T, later is ML5C, Pug swear blind they're not interchangeable but the only difference I can see is the detent springs on the sychronisers changed.

+1 the ML5C (compact)? has a slightly shorter casing, (by about 10mm).

An ML6C is the same size as the ML5T and still has reverse beside 1st
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Now that I didn't know, all I can do is look at badly drawn pictures. Would that mean the gears themselves smaller/thinner? I.e. weaker...

I wouldn't worry about it, I have never had a 406 gearbox fail.

Think they're same, just more of.

As to longevity, mine did 70k in it's original cistern C5 & has tolerated 120k of 400Nm+ abuse since 2013. :supafrisk:
